Just watched the Shining, did you find it scary?

I watched it along time ago(80's) as a kid and found it scary then, not so much now. Just my opinion but I think Poltergeist is much scarier.

the hallway scene with that rabbit/bear thing giving head scared the shite outta me. Haven't watched it since, and I own the DVD.

When I first saw it as a kid, Jack axing the bathroom door scared the frick out of me.
Now that I've seen it so many times, it obviously doesn't scare me much anymore. That doesn't take away from how skillfully crafted and effective it is as a horror movie.

Still think of it as a scary movie but I've seen it enough that I'm desensitized to it. And while Jack's performance is a tour de force, it is definitely a "scarier" movie before he completely flips and starts reallllly chewing the scenery.
Helps to look at it through the kid's eyes. That poor dude is just getting it from all directions.

It might not be quick jumps, and shite jumping out at you "scary," but the atmosphere and the tension in that movie still hold up. Seriously, that movie makes me uncomfortable when I watch it. It's just creepy as hell.

I remember the part where the hot chick turns into a nasty old lady freaked me out as a kid.

That movie wouldn't let me sleep for days when I was 11

When I was a kid, the scene where Jack is tearing the door down with the axe scared the hell out of me.
I watch it now and it's still a good movie but it's not as scary as when I was a little kid.
ETA: What DanglingFury said.

I wish I'd had the opportunity to see it in a theater so I would be forced to sit there paying attention and get drawn into the slow tension of it. Trying to watch on TV it's never hooked my attention.

Scariest part is when she finds the novel and starts flipping through it. It's like awwww shite, here we go.

One of the most disturbing movies ever. The twins, the blowjob in the rabbit suit, naked granny, etc.
And I used to laugh when people said reading horror novels could give you nightmares. And then I read The Shining.

Scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. I couldn't go take a shower cause I was scared to pull open the shower curtain thinking that old naked lady would be there
I don't even watch it when it comes on now. Still creeps me.

It doesn't scare me, but I appreciate it as a great film made by a genius.

any movie can "scare" you
plenty of crappy horror movies use cheap thrills to startle audiences, but that's not really scary. It's a loud noise/scream/thud/etc coming at an unexpected time. It's really annoying to me
It's not chilling, disturbing, or suspenseful like The Shining is

"Jumpe scare" moments can be fun, but when movies start relying on them it starts to suck (especially when they are the only "scares" the movie has).
I agree with most that The Shining isn't scary, but it's unnerving and creepy as hell. Also, if you think about it, not a whole lot happens in the movie...it's a great example of how setting and music can completely set the tone without even doing much. The hotel itself is a pretty creepy place, and when you combine the fact that you're snowed in and can't leave, it's unsettling in itself...throw in a little supernatural shite and you've got a great recipe for creepiness.
Great movie.
And yes, this scene fricks me up every time I see it:

This.
As I get older it just becomes an appreciation of Jack's acting.

It doesn't really scare me. Its just a great movie that I could watch over and over due to Jack and the great eerie atmosphere. One of best movies of all time IMO.
