He was a redshirt freshman. Typically kids get better with experience, so it's not absurd to think that would have been less of a question mark for ND this season.
Again -- I'm not even saying the kid was GOOD, but he absolutely was serviceable and on the right team with the right schedule he could be a winner. We saw that last year.

Just saw this on twitter @ Notre Dame

Ok, now you go from "proven commodity" to "serviceable". Make up your damn mind.
Golson is a blow, for sure, but not worth this boards reaction. Geez.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. You know what you're getting with him -- a serviceable QB. Thus, proven commodity

Proven commodities dont get benched for turnover tommy dude.
Rees is not as good as golson, but he will be fine. He had to bail Golson out twice last year.

Golson did get better during the year, at least at times
but I don't see where this should be a major blow to them, I thought Rees was better anyway....Rees will likely win as many games as Golson would have this season, and Kelly has another year to develop a new QB. I'm sure this situation will attract a major QB recruit now!!

I thought he was pretty good for a FR. If he was kicked out for cheating, then kudos to ND for having standards. Gotta respect that.

I don't know what their depth chart at QB looks like. Since Jason Street got injured, do they have any other highly touted kids at the position?

Tommy Rees pain-train time?

Defense won the games last year. Golson was projected to improve greatly, but it was nothing more than a prediction.

this kid LINK immediately tried to commit after the golson news, you can not make this stuff up not sure if ND will accept his commitment though

what ever happened to Voodoo Tatum?

Looking at how the ND season played out last year, it's reasonable to say that only one game that was a win would have been a loss without Golson (Pitt). And, in fact, if Golson had stayed in, it's possible that one game that was a win could have turned into a loss (Michigan). It hurts, but it's not huge. ND will rely on its D and running game again this year, just like last year.
I'm very curious to see if it's Rees or Hendrix, though. My thought heading into the year was it'd be Rees if Golson went down in the middle of the game or was out a week (like BYU last year), but a major injury would lead to Hendrix as the starter. I wouldn't be shocked if he got the nod over Rees.

Better question: Whatever happened to JD McCoy?
After that loss to East Dillon, he fell off the fricking face of the Earth.

Soooo this is interesting:
I can guarantee ol flip flopping Gunner is aware of this and is preparing himself to revoke his loyalty from his current team.
quote:
Bylaw 14.5.5.2.8, the Return to Original Institution Without Participation or With Minimal Participation Exception says that a student-athlete can play immediately after a transfer if:
The student transfers to a second four-year collegiate institution, does not compete at the second institution and does not engage in other countable athletically related activities in the involved sport at the second institution beyond a 14-consecutive-day period and returns to the original institution. The 14-consecutive-day period begins with the date on which the student-athlete first engages in any countable athletically related activity (see Bylaw 17.02.1). A student may use this exception even if he or she has an unfulfilled residence requirement at the institution from which he or she is transferring.
