+1 on the Taurus.
A 24/7 would be a great truck gun.
For those advocating the Makarov: Doesn't it use a weird proprietary round? I don't think you can go to walmart and buy 9mm-Makarov, can you?

I'm remembering back to when that stuff was a dime a dozen surplus. I don't think it's proprietary since there are so many who produce it.
Can always mail order.
Makarov my buddy had was super-reliable. Fired very well.

Right. I guess "proprietary" was the wrong word...I just meant it's uncommon and only used in that pistol, so your choices for self defense loads are going to be few and far between.

I'm sure it's out there, but how common is it w/o mail order?
Anyway, I'm not trying to be argumenative, just figured I'd point out that it's not quite the same as 9mm or .45...then again these days there's not exactly an overabundance of those either![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

Makarov rounds are commonly found at Academy. There are several hollow point rounds on the market for them as well. it is a 9x18 round so slightly smaller than a 9mm Luger but slightly larger than a 9mm Kurz.

Good point there. I couldn't say. I only do mail order.
9mm and 45 definitely going to be more common. Just that a Makarov is super-reliable and can be had for cheap (though been a while since I last checked).
Since the OP is short on funds and just wants a truck gun, I figure he's not going to be doing a whole bunch of shooting, so corner-store availability of ammo isn't quite as much an issue. Just splitting hairs...

I would steer away from a derringer personally. Their accuracy is shite. With shite accuracy you need more than two rounds.
I agree with the makarov. The round is close to the 380 in size and are pretty commonly found. But it's also cheaper (before Sandy Hook). The 380 does offer more SD ammo like CorBons and Gold Dots than the mak. Maybe the idiot who steals it will think it's broken when he tries to load lugers into it because it says 9mm on the side...would that make you feel better about it?
The real gun/gun safety advocates will tell you never to leave it in your vehicle to have a chance to be stolen. That stance doesn't really fly around here (The OB).

Not short on funds, just don't want to put a semi in a Dems hands if they break in my truck.

1. Assuming you have a permit, why leave the gun in the truck ?? Keep it with you, and theft problem solved.
2. As has been said, derringers are poor SD choices.
3. As has also been said in previous threads, any .380 (Mak or not) is a poor SD option compared to a 9mm or .40 S&W. Any .380 is lethal, but it's not nearly as effective as something that will make larger holes in a BG.
4. I'd focus more on getting a reliable service caliber weapon, than looking for a cheap gun. If you find yourself in need of a gun, you're probably gonna really need one that works. (Remember the old saying about parachutes).
5. Then make sure you secure the weapon (preferably on your person). Get a good holster, and practice with it until you can manipulate the weapon without conscious thought. People who can't at least do that are kidding themselves.
