Why would someone want to go the cheap route when purchasing something that's meant to save their life?

OP, just wait until you can afford a quality firearm.

Because a cheap gun is better than no gun.

Yea, but it's worth waiting a few months and having something that you have trust in. It's not a huge leap either, just a little more of an investment and he can be there. Hell, maybe he has a bday coming up or something.

Either way OP, it will be worth it.

Eh it will be worth it, better than him taking your piece and beating you with it.

Anyways OP, please save up and get a quality self defense firearm. It will be a partner that you can trust for a long time.

A truck gun implies it stays in truck. I don't want some fool jack a semi and come in my house with it.

I know several posters here have gotten guns stolen.

A 2 shot 9 ain't gonna do them as much good as a CZ, Walther, 270, 2 12 gauges, etc.

Y'all as bad as the OT.

A truck gun is also not limited by size if you don't plan on carrying it on your body. Get something you can actually hold onto when you shoot it.

Refer to Dawg's response... Carry it and you solve your problem.

You wanted constructive criticism and you got it. A Derringer is a TERRIBLE self defense weapon. Not to mention, most of them are single-action-only. Forget to pull that hammer back and the 2 bullets you had ready to fly are going nowhere.

If your life is worth it, spend a bit more to get something reliable.

I actually made this video a long time about budget guns. I think one of the best deals out there is the Stoeger Cougar. It is still made on Beretta machines and the only difference between a Beretta Cougar and Stoeger Cougar is the finish. The parts are interchangeable.

Budget Firearm

It is a metal-framed, standard service caliber pistol (9, 40, 45). You can find some online for about $350. Well, that was pre-Sandy Hook. But it's still worth looking.

Good call on the stoeger. I forgot that a friend of mine just bought one and he is keeping it in his truck. He likes the gun.

Some people can't carry where they work.

In my particular instance I cannot carry, and my truck is parked on the side of a street for work.

Absolutely no way I'm leaving anything worth more than a couple hundred in my truck.

Thn you know it is not a .380.

Both suck in comparison to a .223 as well but that is neither here nor there. The 9x18 is faster thn the .380 round yet slower thn the 9mm Luger. Here are some balistics tests on different 9x18 loads and you can see that the round is plenty fast enough to spread a hollow point.

I'm going to suggest modifying this deringer to be spring loaded and accessible via your shirt sleeve.

I presume you are knowledgeable enough to understand that none of the loads you listed meets the FBI test protocol for penetration (although some did come close).

And of probably greater importance, the "spreads" you listed are far inferior to the better (HST, for example) 9mm loads.

But hey, carry whatever you want to carry. I don't plan to recruit you, or anyone else, off these internet chat rooms to provide security for me or my family.

Please see my post above. I have not disputed, at any point, that a Luger is a better round but that was not the topic at hand. A Mak is an affordable and very reliable gun that has affordable and effective ammo. Are there more effective rounds? Of Course. A .50 caliber rounds is preferable to the Luger 9mm but it makes no sense for me to sit here and argue that point with you as it is as ludicrous as you criticizing the Mak for not being as effective as the Luger.

You already pay me to provide security for you and your family.
