Sorry... I knew I'd get drilled for putting Brennan's but I've had some great brunches there, and I really like their Filet Stanley and Bananas Foster at dinner.
As for LA Thai, the Chauvins prepared the first Thai I ever had (back when they owned Bangkok Cuisine) and I still have a great love for them.

La Boca
Gautreaus
Pelican Club
R&O's
Martin Wine Cellar-Metairie
It really is hard to narrow things down to five.
I love my lunch dates on Friday's at Vincent's with my wife. Corn and crab soup and free martini
Love Chateau Du Lac and Café Degas for date nights
And for grand experiences, its hard to leave out Commanders or Restaurant August.

I can't name 5 overall favorites. I like a lot of restaurants for different reasons and they change a bit as I eat at new restaurants.
My overall favorite fine dining experience is The Inn at Little Washington.

I threw in Popeye's in his honor. Speaking of CC, I noticed he's back from banland.

Dang gris gris that looks fancy. Most amazing dining experience for me was hotel punta rossa in Italy many moons ago with good ole ew#1. Napa Rose in Anaheim is pretty amazing if you can get over the fact it's in Disneyland. On a more terrestrial level Lucille's Smokehouse in Belmont Shore and Sushi on Fire in Huntington Beach are quite heavy in the current rotation.

Its a really neat place to stay and at which to dine. It's in the middle of nowhere for the most part. I've stayed there several times and it was a treat and memorable, but sometimes you just want a muffalatta from R&O's or some fried oysters from Casamento's. At the times of those cravings, those are my favorite places.
