WSJ Link
Not sure if the link is premium content or not but the heading says it all. Who else had their moms, wives, and sisters telling them they were going to open up one of these things??
Also what do you all think the next fad bubble is? I am going with clothing lines for males 18-24. (Vineyard vines, etc)

Yeah, nooooobody saw this coming.
Sushi can't be too far behind, as well as the self serve frozen yogurt places.

Interesting article. The only cupcake places I've know about (mainly from my wife) was Magnolia bakery in NYC and Sprinkles in LA. Magnolia actually has a decent banana pudding.
For some reason it makes me laugh that a gourmet cupcake franchiser is listed on the Nasdaq.
As far as the next culinary bubble, I agree with the frozen yogurt and gourmet burger suggestions. Growing up in the 80's, I'm feeling some serious déjà Vu with all of the yogurt joints.

My wife can make cupcakes as good as those bakeries. On the other hand, I've had some gourmet burgers that were much better than anything I've ever made.

I think gourmet burgers are here to stay, I just think they are going to over saturate the market with hipster run joints

The woodlands Texas spots aren't seeing the downturn yet. But we probably have an above average population of stay at home moms looking to impress...

Agreed, except one time I was really impressed by the cupcakes at Gigis in Memphis. They were freaking delicious. Every other time I have had "gourmet" cupcakes they were meh at best and almost impossible to actually eat because they had so much frosting on them.

It's going alright in NWA right now. Bliss cupcakes opened their second store and that land it's built on isn't cheap.

I was talking a year ago that i wish i could find a way to short the cupcake business, I didn't know their was a publicly traded one. I could have retired by now.

I liked Gigi's even though I felt like shite after eating one. But one time I went and asked them how long they would keep (it was summer). The guy told me their recipe for the frosting is 75% butter and 25% sugar and flavoring. After that, I vowed to never eat one again. Too much junk.
As for FroYo collapsing, I don't think it's any time soon. They're marketed so well as being a "healthy" snack that people don't hesitate to get some.

Same. I actually think they are quite gross.

GC blows. Baked and Wired right down the street is half the price and one of the best bakeries in town.
Agree with OP that froyo is next.
