What has the effect of the new MLB draft process been on college baseball.
I know the Red Sox can't steal "college locks" by taking them in the 50th and throwing huge money at them anymore.
It forces MLB clubs to go after players they feel almost certain will sign with their top 10 picks respectively. Once that restrictive limit was placed on bonuses it essentially eliminated the tickets teams would take on a player in rounds 10-30 and throw 7 figures towards them.
We're starting to see the draft slowly transitioning into whats best available at the time of the pick. You'll see highly touted kids drop because of sign-ability and less of them signing in later rounds.
It's a positive for college baseball.

Agreed.

He's a top 50 player. I'd rank this luckier than getting Bergman to campus. Really only like 10% chance he gets here.

The other effect will be to lessen some of the pressure for guys to leave after their junior years. If your salary is slotted then it's a little bit less important to have the leverage of returning to college for another year.

He will take the money and go pro, then in five years he will be deck handing on a crewboat in Fourchon wishing he went to LSU and got an education, improved his skills, and then maybe had a better chance at playing in the MLB. The bonus he will get seems like alot of money, but what happens when its gone and you have no college education??

I coached him for 2 years and know his family well. Will not be on campus. Sorry

can hit the ball 600 feet
Perhaps he can but its highly doubtful. There have only been a handful of balls hit that far in Major League history and they are all unofficial distances.
Major League's official record is Mickey Mantle's 565 foot shot.

This. He misses the college experience, and misses the opportunity to join the LSU family and network.

I know a few kids from the New Orleans area that took the money and passed up an education. Now the money is gone an the regret it every morning when the get up to go to work, when they could still be in school playing ball..

Draft tonight, just keep track of how far he falls. That will determine whether or not he is coming to LSU and has prob told teams he isn't signing.

No, he won't.

I've heard grades would be a serious issue, even if he was drafted in an undesireable position that would allow him to come to LSU. Take it FWIW.

You got the lottery numbers for the next drawing?

....Or he could sock it away and attend college if his pro career doesn't pan out. Seems like a level-headed kid.

Yeah cause every 18 year old saves his 500,000 dollars he gets. Btw, after taxes, that's barely 300,000. But I guess he can retire early on that lol

He very well may be deck handing on a crewboat in Fourchon in 5 years but it will be his choice to do so.. MLB baseball pays for 8 semesters of college for a high school signee after you finish playing.

Never said he could retire on that.
