Food for thought guys, on a topic that seems to need a sticky during mardi gras.

the NOPD has used the law frequently, making dozens of arrests since the statute was adopted. But for all those arrests, including 11 during the 2013 Carnival season, there isn’t a single prosecution to show for it.

NOPD is so corrupt. I am extremely content that I don't live there.

NOPD is so laughably corrupt.

Help me make sure I understand this: the DA can't prosecute this, because the laws is unconstitutional, but the PD said frick it, we're arresting them anyways. Did I read that correctly?
Also, it appears that the gun has to actually be used for this to apply, but the police sound like they arrest anyone with a gun. Even if they have a permit, and are breaking no other laws. The chief or whoever it was that was interviewed, said it stopped "would be" shooters.

But how many firearms were returned to the owners?

Yeah, that's kind of what I got from it too. The DA isn't even accepting the cases ,but NOPD looks at it like they are getting guns off the street.

Yes you are reading into that correctly. NOPD has, and will always continue to let their officers do whatever the hell they want. It is hard to get them to stop because that very behavior is ingrained into them since their first weeks on the street. The ridiculous behavior and corruption goes all of the way up the chain of command, and is swept under the rug 99% of the time.
Moral of the story, you will not ever be able to change NOPD into a legit police department, at least in my lifetime. Illegal behavior is completely acceptable all of the way up to lieutenants and sergeants. Accept it and you can avoid situation that have anything to do with them. Hell, I don't even talk or say hello to them when I see some on the street. That is very uncharacteristic for me

And, y'all say living in bammerland is bad. Every city has bad apples, but I don't know of a city in Alabama where the whole tree is rotten.

The law was put in place after several shootings by thugs along St. Charles Avenue. I remember reading about most of the 13 arrest this year. Most were in the same area as previous shootings. Also, the majority of these thugs would run when the cops approached.
I know NOPD has had it's problems, but I do believe they may have prevented more shootings by arresting these individuals.
The thugs arrested were all illegally carrying concealed handguns (with no permit). Some were stolen. Why couldn't the DA prosecute that?

Probably too busy dealing with things from cops stealing from people all of the way to guys "committing suicide" in OPP.
If the inmates in OPP could figure out how to get around the free Wifi work filters, they would agree

The law referenced in the article prohibits ".....illegal carrying of weapons pursuant to R.S. 14:95 with any firearm used in the commission of a crime of violence as defined in R.S. 14:2(B), within one thousand feet of any parade or demonstration for which a permit is issued by a governmental entity ........."
The NOPD thugs (and the LSP troopers who assist during carnival season) use this as their reason for arresting anyone carrying a handgun -- including those with permits. And that ignorant State Police Commander, Colonel Mike Edmonson, sat in a N.O. radio interview during Mardi Gras and endorsed the Orleans Parish DA's distorted application of this law.
