with those first four guys, we still have enough $$ to get a guy like nikola pekovic. giving cp3 $19mil and pek $15mil wil put us at around $65mil on the books. that is pretty damned nuts for a roster we would have.

We can use the trade exception, min salary, room, veteran, and rookie exceptions.
So we could trade Lopez for a 2nd and get a ~$5.5m trade exception, sign CP3 and get against the cap, then use the trade exception for a similarly price player to go over? Trade exceptions can't be packaged with another player, right?

Well, not exactly, I've got to work the numbers (I really don't think Chris is coming here, by the way), but it'd all have to be coordinated in advance.
Lopez is nonguaranteed. Drop him. Sign Chris with cap space or threaten to do it and send something to LA to get Chris back here, which is ok since we're under the cap and shipping out enough (in this) to make it all work. Then we can use the exception for trades (not the leftover bits in nonsimultaneous deals) to grow the roster like when they added Lopez.
Remember, you just have to be able to sign the FA in one scenario to force a trade. This is what the Heat did (twice).

We'd still need some bench players

Which is why I think we make a pretty big move this offseason, maybe not a CP-caliber move, but a good one.

folks we have plenty assets to use to get what we want this summer. some priorities are unrestricted free agents so that would cost nothing.
ego
lopez
gravy
top 4-6 lotto pick
this is the offseason that we the fans burn down some shite if the fo doesn't put together a really good playoff team.

You put together the right team and the bench players of high skill will come to that team.

This is very likely.
I think they'll collect assets, then trytrytry to get that star in trade a la the Rockets.
Anderson and Anderson2 for PaulbutnotPaul.

Shaq just said tootsie-foot.
It's been a good night. I didn't even mind doing work during the game.
Good game thread, people!

with the guys on the roster already, we'ld only need another shooter after geting a starting sf
of course this is after the main fa targets!

I'm still amazed by the amount of former hornets that were in this game, and also the other former hornets that are in the playoffs.
ETA: but then again, when you think about it a lot of the players that are coming in off the bech for these playoffs teams were starting for us. So there's that.....

1) Will Chris Paul leave?
Every report acts like he's happy and not leaving, and prior to the playoffs I'm sure he was. He's defacto GM and the team played well during the regular season. I'm sure all the people that pushed him out of New Orleans are happy, but he really was one of those people that is driven by hating losing. His people won't tell him he should leave, they'll probably blame it all on Vinny and push for a new coach. Will a 1st round exit be enough of a reality check for Paul to leave when all of his people will be telling him to stay?
2) If he leaves, where too?
All of the Glamor Markets are out. Even without the new rules I don't think it'd work, but the new rules prevent higher level tax teams from doing Sign and Trades so getting Paul isn't even a legal option for the Lakers/Knicks/Heat.
I really think it'd come down to Rockets and Hornets. They have similar cap situations and similar abilities to both sign CP3 and do a S&T for Dwight. The question really is would CP3 rather play with Harden or Davis. I don't think it's that hard of a choice if he's leaving because he wants to win. Harden doesn't need time to develop, the main negative is he could be a bigger star than CP3 and I don't know how Paul would deal with that. I'm kind of concerned about Paul leaving. Rockets with Paul/Harden/Dwight would make it a lot harder to contend with Davis.

I was told by someone that worked for the Hornets until recently that CP hates LAC, doesn't like his teammates...but he wouldn't be coming back here. His people are pushing him to stay there because of his and THEIR opportunities (cough CJPaul cough), but he really wants to be in the Eastern Conference and closer to home. He mentioned Atlanta being on CPs radar, but his people want him in LAC.
Massive grain of salt.

Christ that would be awful for us.
At least 5 years with those guys together, still in their prime, in our Division and Conference.

Yeah, can't believe I forgot them. They are the best case scenario short of him returning to NOLA.
So join Dwight and Harden, Dwight and Horford, or Dwight and AD. Monty would have to really have a connection to Paul for the Hornets to have a shot.

Everything I've heard or observed regarding CJ is that he's a tool. WTF would he do without his brother's coat tails.

I just don't think we do.
CP wants to win Championships. And that's it.
He will not win one with us any time soon. Even adding him, I still think we are a little ways away, because Davis has to keep developing over the next 3 years or so, and we need depth.
LAC has the huge LA market, an already established player in Blake, etc. They can probably attract a big time coach and big time FAs.
Atlanta and Houston are much bigger markets as well. Houston has Harden and cap space. Atlanta has Horford, they could resign Smith if they get CP I imagine, etc.
