re: Eric Bledsoe's Trade Value

Sons, peep this.
We played our boy Greivis Vasquez 34.4 MPG at PG this past season.
Assume we trade for Eric Bledsoe and play him 30+ minutes a night as our starting PG.
Bledsoe played 30+ minutes 8 times this season for a 35.9 MPG average. Below is his averages for those 8 games and where he would rank amongst 2013 NBA PGs:
14.0 PPG (15th)
6.4 APG (18th)
4.5 RPG (2nd)
1.9 SPG (5th)
1.3 BPG (1st)
84.6 FT%(9th)
40.6 FG%(30th)
40.0% 3P% (11th)
His PPG would put him in Dragic, Conley, Teague range.
His APG would put him in Curry, Lawson, Jennings, Lillard, Lowry range.
His RPG puts him in Westbrook's range.
His SPG puts him in Kemba, Westbrook, Ellis range.
His BPG already leads the league amongst PGs.
His FT% puts him in Irving, Parker, Lillard range.
His FG% is terrible. But it is better than Brandon Jennings.
His 3P% puts him in Irving, Mo Williams, Jack range.
Now, some will say 8 games is too small of a sample size. You could argue that he would not be able to duplicate those numbers over a full season. Or, you could argue that given ample and steady playing time would allow him to match or even improve those numbers. Remember, we are dealing with a 23 year old here. And we arent talking max money for a new contract.
I ask you, sons, how can you be disappoint with that?

I agree. I just mentioned Lopez because his name was brought up.
I really don't think we're gonna gut our roster to bring in guys like Bledsoe. Monty mentioned depth multiple times in that press conference and how that was one of the major differences in many of the better teams in the league. Dell mentioned multiple times that they set themselves up for this offseason, with this cap room, for a reason.
With our pick and the money we have to spend we can get better at PG and C without having to get rid of Vasquez or Lopez

18 minutes in game 1..dude goes 7 for 7 (16 pts), 4 assists and 6 rebounds.

Did you take into consideration the talent his playing with vs the talent he'd have playing with us? Would that skew the numbers?

Not disappointed =/= impressed. I can see Bledsoe being a better fit but I still see him as just an averagish starter, and averagish starting point guards have been found pretty regularly late in the 1st so I don't see much point in burning assets to get him when the window for contention is still several years away.

To go a step further....
Go back to 2012, Vasquez played 30+ MPG 16 times for a 35.9 MPG average.
12.4 PPG
7.6 APG
2.9 RPG
1.6 SPG
.1 BPG
80.5 FT%
48.5 FG%
14.3 3P%
And of course, he put up these as a starter playing 34.4 MPG in 2013:
13.9 PPG
9.0 APG
4.3 RPG
.8 SPG
.1 BPG
80% FT
43% FG
34% 3P
Now, if Bledsoe is really the superior PG in comparison to GV, one would assume he could improve his numbers I posted above, much like GV did. If he improved them, even a little, he would be an upper echelon PG in the NBA.

Yes, I punched that into my formula.

Say we do land Bledsoe, would I would rather have at the point over Burke.
My ideal draft candidate would then be Anthony Bennett. He can start at the 3, athletic as shite and has range.
Can move to the 4 when Davis plays the 5. Them two plus Bledsoe/Gordon backcourt, has the makings of the Denver Nuggets athleticism.

Do not want.
3-4 tweeners tend to have a high bust rate, typically because they aren't fast enough to guard a 3 or big enough to guard a 4.

I say forget Bledsoe and go after Rondo.
1. Trade GV/Rivers/Lopez and our 1st for Rondo and Boston's 1st. (yeah I'm playing NBA 2k right now)
2. Sign a SF like Martell Webster in free agency
3. Sign a stop gap center like Samuel Dalembert or JJ Hickson
Rondo/Roberts
Gordon/Tim Hardaway Jr
Webster/Aminu
Davis/Anderson/Amundson
Dalembert/Smith

That's a non-starter.
Vasquez, Rivers, Lopez, AND switching firsts, meaning a drop of about 10 spots, is a bit much.
That dumps every tradeable asset we have but Anderson in hopes that we can sign a 3 and a 5 worth a shite with our remaining cap room.
Given that the salary cap is likely to come down this year, that will only leave us with probably $14-16 million to fill 7 roster spots, which could come down to $10m to fill 3 roster spots if we draft at #16 and pick up the options on Lance Thomas, Darius Miller, and Brian Roberts.
$10m for 3 roster spots is jack-shite when you're still trying to get a starting 3 and a starting 5.

This doesn't take away from your main point, but everything I've seen suggests it's going up to around $60 million.

Going from $10m in space to probably $16m in space may be significant but still not enough to make a play for a huge FA or two due to cap holds for the last three roster spots (roughly $800K a pop) and any players we haven't renounced like Xavier Henry ($3m) or Aminu ($4.5m).

I like Bledsoe but I sure as hell am not giving up Ryan Anderson for him unless he signs a reasonable extension with us (say 4yr/7-8million range), especially if I have to take that Jordan contract and his piss-poor attitude back in return.

You can't be disappointed with Bledsoe's production, he's a good player. Its a matter of what we give up and having a much bigger problem at SF than PG
I'd rather trade for a new SF than a PG, but if we can get a SF in free agency, then a Bledsoe trade could work

I understand the defensive angle in wanting him, but the extent to which a PG's defense actually changes the team has been really exaggerated imo. How much a team actually NEEDS an awesome defender at PG has been exaggerated as well.
It might be exaggerated, but it's still valuable.
What is extremely valuable and not exaggerated are his elite steals and blocks numbers--2.5 SPG and 1.3 BPG as a starter this season (Two six steal games as starter)...That's turnovers and fast break opportunities.
quote:
The guy can't shoot
I disagree. He's improved in all shooting categories and should continue to do so.
45% FG on the season, improvement each season...only 41% as starter--a few terrible nights bringing it down though. He's not a chucker. I think he'll average more PPG with a higher percentage than Vasquez as a starter.
40% 3PT on the season, improvement each season...44% as starter.
80% FT on the season, improvement each season.
...I like Vasquez, but Bledsoe is better at everything but passing with a few elite skills.
quote:
he isn't a distributor.
I don't know. He went for 5.3 APG as starter playing mostly with Jordan/Griffin/Green/Butler...Griffin missed a few games in that stretch and was replaced by Odom. With Gordon, Davis, and in particular, Anderson, that assist number could very well go up (see Vasquez). Outside of Paul, Rondo, Vasquez, and Holiday, #5-10 average 7.3-7.7 APG.
Vasquez is a better passer than Bledsoe, no doubt, but I think Bledsoe can be solid there.
quote:
and do a slightly better job guarding elite PGs that nobody in the league can actually stop anyway.
There's not gonna be much lockdown D on good players in the NBA, but that doesn't mean his D won't be much better than others' efforts (especially with all those forced turnovers).
quote:
Its just not worth it to me for Bledsoe to come here and be a minus on offense
You can't give up too much for him, of course. Only do it if the price is right. He's very valuable though, imo, especially with Dell and Monty clamoring for perimeter D. He's tops in the league there.
...I don't think he's a minus on offense. 15 PPG will put him in the top ten among PGs. He's very capable of that.
He's a better rebounder than Vasquez and will actually be able to initiate a fast break when he grabs one--will make this team more aggressive/faster-paced/more transition oriented which we need with the youth and for Davis and Anderson.
I think he can be similar to Rondo in a lot of ways...not as many assists, but younger, cheaper, and a better shooter.
Bledsoe/Gordon/Anderson/Davis would be awesome for next season (if Gordon can get his shite together).

With that said, i'd probably gamble on Bledsoe before I gave any money to Jennings. We know exactly who he is.
agreed.

Gyno posted a lot of what I just posted...
Bledsoe's last 3 games as starter this season:
23 points(9-15 FG), 10 assists, 7 boards, 2 steals, 1 BLK
17 points(7-14 FG), 9 assists, 1 steal, 2 BLK
27 points(9-21 FG), 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 steals, 3 BLK
Playoffs:
15 points(7-7 FG), 6 boards, 4 assists in 18 minutes.
8 points(3-6 FG), 4 boards in 14 minutes.
...He's ready to break out.
