The fall of Allen Iverson

Came out over the weekend in the Washington Post...REALLY long article, but fascinating. Did a search and got nothing, so if it's Germans, many apologies to the crowd.
Some highlights:
Full story.
The loss of his money combined with the alcohol has this going down a bad path.
Some highlights:

For the past three years, as Iverson chased an NBA comeback, his marriage fell apart and much of his fortune – he earned more than $150 million in salary alone during his career – dissolved. Now, those who once ignored past signals have recognized that basketball may have been the only thing holding Iverson’s life together.
“He has hit rock bottom, and he just hasn’t accepted it yet,” says former Philadelphia teammate Roshown McLeod.

Iverson kept living as if another contract was imminent, and Tawanna struggled to curb his spending. According to a bank statement submitted in the divorce, the couple’s checking account was overdrawn by more than $23,000 in July 2011. In a single day, $23,255.36 was deducted – at a diamond store, a hat shop, a steakhouse and a hotel.
quote:
When he met with an investigator to discuss custody of his five children, he “smelled remarkably of alcohol,” according to the investigator’s testimony. Months later, during a scheduled alcohol evaluation, he again arrived with alcohol on his breath.
quote:
Iverson stood during a divorce proceeding in Atlanta in 2012 and pulled out his pants pockets. “I don’t even have money for a cheeseburger,” he shouted toward his estranged wife, Tawanna, who then handed him $61.
quote:
McKie and others have texted. Iverson responds sometimes, although days or weeks often pass. Other times, there’s no reply. He keeps to himself, something of a recluse, and declines most interview requests. Last year his eldest daughter, Tiaura, asked to live with her father, according to divorce testimony transcripts. She was concerned about how few people her dad interacts with.
“I just don’t like to see it end this way,” Larry Brown said.

I will never forgot how he carried the 2000–01 Philadelphia 76ers to the finals.

Stephen A. did an article like this a few years ago and you could tell it really hurt him to write the article because he loves the guy. AI was into the Detroit casinos for a bunch of money during his short stint here.
I seem to remember a story from a teammate who rented or bought AI's house. AI left garbage bags of cash in the house. The teammate tried to return the money and AI was like "don't worry about it."

Sad to see that. Just insane how these athletes are awful with money. I mean 125 million over a career and he's broke?
P.s. Roshown McLeod - wow. Haven't heard that name in a while. Never amounted to much.

He's gonna get paid in 2030 if he makes it that long.

Didn't Dez Bryant owe a huge amount to a jewelry store in Texas? These guys are just bags of money to those stores

AI seems to be The Answer to the question of "What superstar athlete has had the biggest financial flame-out?"
He could still be in the league if he were willing to be a bench player, but his ego wouldn't allow him to do so. That's why he ended up getting waived by Detroit and later Memphis.
That may not pay him superstar dollars, but the veteran minimum is nothing to sneeze at, let alone when you're fricking broke.

This ispretty sad..... BUt its ALL self inflicted.. I really don't feel bad for the guy. He had his shot and blew it... Was once rich and now will end up living under a bridge.

I loved watching him play, but it is really difficult to feel sorry for a thug POS who blew threw $150 million.

For a couple years, Stephen A. Smith's sole purpose was to give up Allen Iverson updates. It was awesome.
I really do feel bad Iverson though. He grew up without money, and he really does not understand it. I wish some players could have their money controlled, but I know they would never accept that. There is far too much pressure from outsiders and "family" trying to catch part of their quick fortunes.
The future pro athletes need college courses on money management. They need to be learning that, not having Joe Blow write their essays for them.

Wow that is so sad that someone with that much money, and now he does not have enough to survive.
