Look at what the locals use. Yamaha, Merc, Tohatsu.

Any particular reason for having a 4 stroke over a 2 stroke? What size boat? How will you be using it primarily (marsh or lakes)? Will you be constantly removing it from the transom?

These questions will help in figuring out what you will really want. Weight is the key issue here.



That being said, I've run a 4-stroke Tohatsu 20hp for about 4 years now (permanently installed). Besides letting the gas get stale every once in a while, it hasn't let me down.

20hp?

Man, buy any used 2 stroke (merc, yamaha, johnson, evinrude, nissan/tohatsu, etc. are all good) and thank me later.

Pay attention to the specs on the 20 vs 25 yamaha. CC's and displacement and such. It might make a diff to you.

This can be a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it

We use yamaha 40hp 4 strokes on our seining boats on the catfish farm. They don't hold up too well imo. We switched to Tohatsu and they seem to do better

THIS! I have a couple older Suzuki motors. Love them, but it getting harder to get parts for them. Paid $165 for a alum prop for a 9.9hp. No one makes an aftermarket prop for that motor in 1989 thru 1997.
