Risean Broussard (JUCO DT orig from Lake Charles) entering draft

Broussard was thought to be a fallback option for LSU at DT this recruiting cycle, or possibly a guy that could play his way into an offer by being too good for us to pass up.
He was originally in the 2010 class I think out of Lagrange. Signed with Tennessee but never even sniffed qualifying.
He had a great '12 season that put him back on the recruiting radar, but according to a headline (because I didn't even read the article) on jcfootball.com, he's forgoing any remaining eligibility and signing with an agent.

I know of this kid. He's a kid that truly does not like school nor wants to go. He can't understand why he can't just play football and not have to worry about the school stuff.
Now's his chance to try.
I do think he's good enough to go to camp and maybe make a roster. Some coaches I know in that league said he was the best prospect in that conference. Same team as Quantavius Leslie, if I recall right.
He's a Glenn Dorsey type in that he's not extremely tall, but has long arms, good balance and a very high motor. Kid works hard too, but just hates school.

quote:he kind of has a point. why is it that we insist kids go to college and get a degree when only about 10% of the ones that go to most schools end up with degrees they actually use later in life?

The real reason is so we dont feel guilty about watching them on tv and having the schools make money off of them for free. insisting that every kid in america should try to get a 4 year degree is fricking naive - we need more trade and technical schools in this country.

So many things wrong with that statement...

I'm sympathetic for the kid. By all accounts, he does not lack work ethic. He loves football and works hard at it. He just doesn't like school.
I hope for him he makes it, builds a nice nest egg playing football, then finds a solid job where he won't have to have a degree.

Who insists that? The NFL? I can think of many very good reasons why the NFL wants that to be the case.

Why school? Just in case the whole football thing does not work out.. All it takes is one play for that career to be over. Totally disagree with your statement but it is your opinion.

What is it with JUCOs going NFL right away? When was the last one drafted?

Well if you insist on playing in the NFL- you have to prove your good enough. Right now, the best way and only way to do that, is to go play college ball at some level.

right, but i'm talking about when they're here, a lot of people like to lament the fact that athletes bolt for the nfl without getting their degree, as if every kid who comes through to pay football is going to take full advantage of a degree in sociology or general studies or whatever. The entire PC culture that everyone should go to a 4 year college totally regardless of a laundry list of other factors, and that if anyone says, look the reality is that this kid going to a 4yr college is just gonna waste his time and money - is automatically accused of racism, is just bullshite.
but i didnt mean to hijack. i'll start a thread on the poliboard tomorrow about education.

The reason for college athletes to get a real education while in college is pure self interest. Very few of them will ever play a down at the professional level. Of those, even fewer will make enough to set themselves up for life... of those that do make a lot of money even fewer will manage it well enough to make it last for their lifetime.
So pretty much I disagree with your point of view.
