How do these specs sound to you guys?
Processor: Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz
Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600
Hard Drive: 1TB SATA 7200RPM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645 1GB GDDR5
For those of you who are probably familiar with these specs, it's from an Alienware computer. Not purchasing an Alienware though. Just trying to educate myself on parts before I purchase. I would purchase these things separately and put the computer together myself.
Also, what would y'all recommend as far as operating systems go and anti-virus software?

What do i need to be looking at when I'm looking at graphics cards?
Posted on 7/24/14 at 8:27 pm to Henry Jones Jr
Nvidia gtx 750 ti and higher (760, 770, etc) or an and r9 card

shite, I didn't know Alienware sold garbage configs like that. Not being a smartass -- I really thought their rigs started at least in the gtx 760 range.

How much for these 2? Are you upgrading?
Hell IDK. I'm not using them anymore.
What are they going for now?

I think it may have been from an older model. It was one on newegg for like $800

Holy frick, trying to pick a GPU and monitor are 2 of the hardest things to think about in planning a pc build.

Used 290 or 290x and a 1440p monitor... There you go!

In rough order of what I'd pick first. I skipped over all the ones with reference coolers to save the hassle of noise and heat.
R9-290
MSI Radeon R9-290 Gaming - Used, Perfect Working Condition, Retail Box, has at least couple years of warranty left - $295
Gigabyte R9-290 Windforce OC Edition - Lightly used, Retail Box, has at least a couple years of warranty left - $330
ASUS R9-290 DirectCU II OC - Opened but never used, has at least a couple years warranty left -- $333
R9-290x
Gigabyte R9-290x Windforce 3 - New in Box - $392
Gigabyte R9-290x Windforce 3 - used, retail box, at least 2 years warranty left - $386
However, even though they are more expensive brand new, you do get 3 free games with it. This Gigabyte R9-290 is $349 after rebate on newegg: LINK
$379 after rebate for the Sapphire Tri-X OC 290, 3 free games: LINK
None of the 290x's are worth buying new, as they start at $479+.
You choose 3 of these:
Many of those are old and can be had at any steam sale for a couple of bucks, so the value of this bundle would depend on the games you wanted.
For a monitor, pick one of these: 1440p Perfect Pixel monitors
Do not be alarmed by the fact that they come from Korea. The shipping is inhumanly fast. Mine arrived in like 2 business days via DHL.

Is $800 your max budget for tower only?

Not anymore. I could go $1000 or a little more now.

Are those Korean monitors reliable? Like guaranteed refresh rates?
Posted on 7/25/14 at 9:27 pm to Futures Bleak
They are all guaranteed 60Hz. Some of them overclock to somewhere between 61hz and 120hz, but results will vary as well as quality at higher refresh rates. I would not buy any of those with the intent to overclock. They will run perfectly at 60hz. However, I've read that the QNIX QX2710 Evolution II and the X-Star DP2710 models are known to overclock reliably to at least 90+hz.
In my link, I only included search results for "perfect pixel" models as well. Some of those panels are sold with a guarantee of no more than 5 dead pixels, but I never have wanted to deal with that shite, wondering whether they'll have any bad pixels, where they'll be located, and how much I'll notice them. The Perfect Pixel models have zero dead/stuck pixels.
The quality is pretty excellent. You'll be spoiled by it. I've yet to game on 4k, but I imagine once I get a 4k monitor, I won't want to go back.
