re: Tavon Austin at 15

If Tavon Austin is available at 15 and the key pass rushers aren't there (Jones, Jordan, Ansah... do not want Mingo) or someone like Star isn't there, then we should trade our 15th pick to the Viking for 23 or 25 and pick up a 2nd rounder. They need another WR badly, and we may even still be in the market for Sheldon Richardson, Ryan has been very high on Johnathan Hankins, or someone like Ogletree. With how deep the defensive class is a 2nd rounder is crucial to building. WR is a need, but you still have Nick Toon waiting in the wings if he is healthy, and we can try and find someone later on after we address Tackle if we don't settle this in FA.

If that offer is there, I'd take it.

Exactly my point. You pick the player you think will be the best on your team, have the best career, have the biggest impact, and be the best value where he is being picked.
If that's Tavon Austin...so be it. A legit playmaker at WR as well as a PR/KR is a need in my opinion.
Obviously, LT OLB NT S are bigger needs...but if the Saints have him rated high enough over any guys at those positions, then you pick him.
Let's just say that for the sake of argument the following players are gone when we pick:
DT/NT: Floyd, Star
LT: Joeckel, Fisher, Johnson (Warmack gone too at OG)
OLB: Jones, Mingo, Jordan, Ziggy
Who do you go with?
Another CB? What if the best player, by far, is Tavon Austin?
What if no one is offering worth a trade down?

At work. We have a strict no fapping policy for some reason. Slavedrivers.

Couldn't agree more with this whole post. The people on here freaking out over the suggestion of drafting a WR really need to calm down. If the staff sees Austin as the best player on the board at 15, you bet your arse that Austin will be the pick. They aren't going to pick a defensive player they don't like, just to pick a defensive player.
To the people freaking out on the OP: Have any of you actually watch how the Saints have drafted since Loomis and Payton have been here? I'm guessing not by the reactions.
I'll be the first to admit Austin wouldn't be my first choice. Of the players most likely to be there, Ogletree is first on my list, but I wouldn't hate the Austin pick. No one can deny that we are pretty thin at WR, especially a deep threat (even with Morgan).
To the OP: Shake the haters, bro. This was a very legit question.

I restrained myself. He is probably the #1 offensive playmaker in this years draft. Can score on any play from anywhere on the field.
Colston, Morgan, Moore, Toon, Roby
Sproles, Cadet, Thomas, Ingram, Ivory
If Austin at 15 who goes? A very similar skill set to Sproles out of the backfield. Also a lights out slot receiver with great speed. He could potentially replace Moore and Sproles. The only thing is these 2 guys have been fantastic for this team and are still very good players. I dont know what kind of cap room you would clear up but just a thought. Losing a young cheap guy like Cadet makes no sense because we have no idea how Payton can use him yet. By the way I dont want to do this.

Anyone who thinks they won't go BPA is ignorant.

I hope it doesn't happen but, what happens if moore/sproles happen to get injured we aren't screwed, but we won't be super dynamic. morgan is your homerun hitter, roby throughout his whole tenure hasn't been a viable receiving option, cadet I'm not sure will be either. You don't know if toon will pan out. If Tavon Austin is really on the board, and given NT/OLB/LT's we want are all gone, I would want to move back, if we can't and we pick Tavon I wouldn't mind it since he would be BPA. It gives us depth and an upgrade in our ageing receiving corp and possibly a future playmaker for years to come.

The whole BPA thing gets overblown. If Geno Smith or Warmack are there and are highest on the Saints boards, they're HIGHLY unlikely to pick them.
But if they have, say Austin ranked above a Mingo or Vacarro, yeah, it could happen. Problem is, I agree that he's probably going to be primarily a slot WR (we're pretty good there with Moore)/occasional RB (good there as well) as opposed to a split end or flanker. I don't know how he's going to handle tougher press corners and I can't imagine him ever being a very good blocker, but apparently he was surprisingly strong at the combine. He's also not going to win many jump balls downfield, and Drew typically trusts our guys one on one deep.
I'm definitely on board with a LT at 15 in Johnson is there, but I wouldn't be against Austin or Patterson. Morgan is the only WR on the team that can stretch defenses, and while I'm high on him, he's still somewhat unproven. If he goes down, Colston, Moore, Toon, and Roby aren't going to be forcing D coordinators to play a safety deep. If they like Austin/Patterson, I'm OK with the pick, but I think at that point we'd be getting calls from the Vikings and Rams.

Saints WR corps are horrible but god forbid you point that out on this board.
Colston is great possession receiver. Moore is interesting. Then you have nobody.
Oh yeah, Jimmy Graham but you take him out and you're in the bottom half of the league.

I'm not sure this possibility is as far fetched as people believe; however, I still think we go defense.
I pretty much agree with this. I think some people are overreacting to the suggestion we go offense. It's happened before. And pigeon-holing itself into a position/unit has led to some bad draft picks by the Saints and other teams around the league. The simple fact is that whoever the Saints take with the 1st pick probably won't have a huge impact on the defense in 2013, regardless.
I think we go defense - and I think we should go defense - but some of you act like it's unprecedented to reinforce a current strength.

Yeah, Lance Moore sucks.
Finally someone with the balls to point out what isn't true.

If people are so quick to argue that welker is a product of the system, I honestly don't wanna feel the amount of flames I'd get for saying moore is DEFINITELY a product of the system.
Posted on 3/18/13 at 2:04 pm to Hoodoo Man
He doesn't suck, but he's very much a product of our system, there are only a handful of teams in the league where he is a truly viable weapon on IMO.

If Lance Moore is your #2 WR then you should think about drafting a WR IMO. Is that really our biggest need? No. But I think it's just a testament to Drew Brees. His receivers are garbage from 2-5 but he still puts up numbers with Graham leading in drops and Colston's 4.8 40

Why is that a problem?
"He wouldn't be weapon on a different team."
Good thing he's not on a different team.

I'm of the opinion that Moore has skillz and many/most teams do not know how to utilize them. The same could be said for players like Sproles.
I think some of you guys are being unfair to Lance Moore.
