here's to the best day in boat ownership
Anyone got any suggestions for ff/gps combo? I'm thinking about picking up a Lowrance Elite 5 dsi, they are on amazon for $399.00 right now. Looking to keep the combo under $500.

Your next best day will be the day you sell it...
Nice boat, though!

Congrats on the purchase.
That's a great boat you got there. I essentially have the next size down (18') and love it.
My simple recommendation, get a good hand held GPS and a separate (and probably cheaper) fish finder.
If you want a combo, the new Garmins are pretty solid.

If I were to buy a new gps today, I would buy a lowrance HDS. I like the lowrance becauset hey take the Navionics chip which essentially gives you satellite imagery on our gps.

The one I'm looking at takes that chip as well. The only downside I can see to the daily is that it is only recommended for depths of less than 200 feet.......since I fish out of dauphin island/perfidious pass that shouldn't be a problem.

Congrats. Wont be long before you start eyeing some 22 footers with 250s on them.
As far as GPS/fish finder combos go spend a little extra and get you a lowrance HDS 7. Can get them for 600-700 depending on model. They are great products.

I put a Lowrance HDS 5 on my rig in december, love it so far!
Check out the standard map cards, about to pull the trigger on one, they look top notch and supposed to give you routes to travel as well!

Have seen videos of that chip and would like to check it out. I think the 7 is a good minimal size if you are into running a split screen. Kind of like TVs, never have one big enough

Unfortunately I'm sure you're right (about a bigger boat)......I'm trying to soften the wife up to the idea of stepping up to one of the HDS models (probably the 5). It seems like the DSI would be awesome for bottom fishing (marking tanks, wrecks, and rubble)

OB slipping. Nobody asked yet where he's going to put the trolling motor on thks thing yet.

Like someone else said, hand-held GPS and seperate depth finder. There's no point in wiring up the big nasty dash units anymore

Nice Boat. Couple of things: You're gonna need to cut the front rail to make room for a trolling motor. Then, get rid of that bimini top if you plan on doing any real fishing.
As far as a GPS, I love Garmin units. You can get the 531 combo at or near $550. If not, a smaller one in the 400 series would work for that boat.
I disagree with the best day being the day you sell your boat. I have enjoyed every minute of mine.

I agree. As long as you take good care of it and don't neglect the little problems you will be fine.

In my experience you are usually thrilled to finally sell the boat and after a few months you start missing it.

The only way I would sell mine is to get a new one.

I'm looking at a garmin as well. Probably will get crucified for this but I ain't putting a trolling motor on it. And finally I've started getting quotes on t-tops. If anyone knows someone who does good work but won't break the bank I'm all ears.
