re: Why is Monty a good coach?

I've been holding on to this story for awhile because I didn't want to get anyone in trouble.
This is 3rd hand info, but I know its true because of who its from. So here you go:
A prominent local professional (I'm not going to say what, but you can figure it out) that deals with Monty's family on a very regular basis for years now ran into the Williams' at a local restaurant around Christmas time. He shook Monty's hand, gave Monty's wife a peck on the cheek in greeting (as EVERYONE does in New Orleans), and spoke with them and the kids. He knows them all very well.
The next day he gets a call from Monty. Monty goes crazy, telling him that you never touch another man's wife, ever. He's screaming at him about it. The guy is stunned and asks him what he's talking about. He was talking about the peck on the cheek in greeting. Monty continues to just assail him about it, threatening him with beating him up, etc. And he tells him they will no longer be using his services.
But Monty didn't curse the whole time.

If option A is covered, option B is to have Vasquez throw up a prayer.
Is some of that a limitation of Vasquez though? Granted you should know the limitation and try to scheme around it, especially at the end of games, but much of the criticism of Vasquez is he's too slow to give you more than option A or B.

He comes across to me like his shite doesn't stink.
He's definitely a his way or the highway kind of coach, but maybe Davis Sr. and the in process fan meltdown is having an effect. I don't know why practice was cancelled today, but I have to imagine he or his bosses are questioning his methods today.
One of my biggest problems with Monty is other than Malone he hasn't reached much outside of his coaching tree for assistants. In fact his top 2 assistants coached him when he was playing. I think having a higher level assistant with a different perspective might help.

I imagine that Benson called Lauscha and Loomis. They call in Dell. Dell calls in Monty. Its not a good day for them, I imagine.

Then sit his arse on the bench in crunch time. If youre a starting PG in this league your progressions should be not limited to A then heave.

I agree, but that kinda goes against his my way on the highway mentality. Remember, he's been touted around the league as this great young coach.

Last night was bad for business.
Lots people who were having fun deciding to catch a game or 2 since we looked good, deciding now notworth it. Esp with laker fans singing nanana goodbye as hornet fans walked out.
I was going to put my deposit down today and decided not to. Not guranteed I renew now when I havent had 2nd thoughts in awhile. All seasons problems came to head last night

I honestly don't think it's on Vasquez. Monty doesn't react like Vasquez is going off script trying to play hero. The problem is that our offense shuts down and we rarely make more than one pass. It goes with the "wind the clock down" mentality.

Of course you don't. You really really like Vasquez and truly believe in him.
I on the other hand think Vasquez is the very definition of mediocre and would replace him in less than a heartbeat. So I think it all falls on the PG in late game situations.
Eye of the beholder. See how that works.

That's my point. It's Monty's responsibility to give his team the best option to win. His play calling is to wait til 7-10 seconds on the shot clock, look for Ryan or Gordon, if they're covered, there's nothing left but for him to create himself. Will result in a desperation prayer.
See, we agree on something. I knew I liked you this whole time.

Who else has stepped up? You're really blaming he alone for the entire team not scoring a single point for the final 8 minutes of the game? I've never claimed he's Lebron James, but he's a damn solid PG who plays with fire and shows strong leadership qualities. I think you'd be a dumbass for giving that up for the likes of Brandon Jennings.
My words are clear. No beholder necessary. Stop twisting my words.

Look dude. You need to learn to chill. You take everything so personally and overreact.
I was kidding around and simply saying that different perspectives on a player leads to different ways to analyze situations.
You think Vasquez is good. You like him as a player. Therefore you are more willing to look for an answer to the situation that is more all-encompassing: Monty, other players, etc.
I don't think he's very good, although I do "like" him, personally. I think late game situations always come back to two people: the coach and the PG (or, the Superstar player, which we don't have). The PG runs the show. He has a giant role in our late game inefficiency. My opinion on him as a player colors my perception of these situations...just as yours does.

Yet you keep dodging the point that I am completely acknowledging his limitations. That is my whole point. It's clear that he's not a dominant closer, but does anyone really think he is (outside of maybe Monty)?
As for it all coming back to the coach and PG....that's just silly. Kobe took the game over last night. Lebron takes the game over every night. Durant takes games over late at times. Shaq used to take over late. The only PGs who are expected to take over like that late are All-Stars like CP3, Westbrook, etc. Vasquez is never going to be one of those guys, so it's on the coach to stop forcing him into that role. It's not working. Is Gravy supposed to tell Monty to shut up in a huddle and draw up his own play?

Which is the problem. Gordon has been struggling late in games, which forces Vasquez into a bigger role than he should play. Anderson, our other elite scorer, did not do a very good job of making himself available for passes.
I just don't think it's fair to blame any one player when the entire team sucked arse.

You're right that Vasquez shouldn't be fully blamed. But he is terribly inefficient late in games.

Just so there are no misunderstandings. I am not now, nor have I ever been an attorney for the Williams family.

He has been, bit it also seems like the entire offense is put on his shoulders at the end of games. He's not that guy. Like I said, very few of those guys exist. It's on the coach to draw up plays.
I like Monty. He seems to really have a knack for keeping young players on an upward trajectory, but he has some noticeable deficiencies on the bench. As others have said, we need a good bench coach who can bring Monty's crew some fresh ideas.

That averages out to 5 yrs in the league per player. That's pretty much describes a veteran, doesn't it?

Guess that U.N.O. Business Degree didn't help my math skills either. :rotflmao:
