Pure speculation on my point, but I can see this playing out.
Lakers amnesty Pau Gasol and sign Josh Smith (and D12).
T'Wolves pick up Gasol to pair him with Rubio and send Pekovic to Nola in a sign and trade for Robin Lopez. 4 years/$48 million for Pek

No way we get Pekovic for Robin Lopez. Definitely wouldn't mind having him at center, though.

I agree we couldn't get Pek for Lopez, but the T'Wolves for some reason covet Gasol. No way they keep Love, Gasol (if they were able to acquire him), and Pek. And they would at least get something for Pek instead of letting him leave as a RFA.

I'm not sure this part of it works out. The Lakers won't be able to sign Smith, they'd have to do a S&T. Would the Hawks want Ron Artest and Steve Blake even if a pick came along with it? Maybe the S&T is Gasol and a pick rather than amnestying Gasol. Do the Lakers even have any picks though, IIRC they gave up a few to get Nash.

Supposedly the TWolves see Mozgov at $3 million as a better value than Pekovic and $10+ million, so this part is still very possible even without Gasol going to Minnesota.
quote:
"They like Mozgov," a league source said. "They think he is a better value than Pek (Nikola Pekovic). They would let Pek go in free agency (this summer). They still may pursue Mozgov in free agency."
Yahoo! Sports reported on Tuesday night the Wolves offered Roy and the Memphis first-rounder for Mozgov but were turned down. A happy medium between the two teams is unlikely in the next two days.
Pekovic's camp has been given verbal assurances he's staying put for now, but nothing beyond that. A team source still scoffs at the notion that Pekovic is worth $11 million/year on a long-term deal. But whether it's the Wolves or a different team, it's inevitable he's getting that this summer.
In a letter to season-ticket holders this week, Wolves coach Rick Adelman wrote, "Our goal is to re-sign (Pekovic) this summer." Another source said there's concern Pekovic will never be able to hold up for a full season. Playing extended minutes for the first time last season, he broke down, and he has missed games this year as well.

If a player is amnestied, his salary is still paid but it is not counted against the team's cap. Since they are the Lakers and are always in the Luxury Tax, I think they could just use Gasol's money to pay for J Smith... And I'm pretty sure J.Smith is a UFA, so you can't really do a sign and trade there... And Lakers sent all of their picks to PHX for Nash

They'd still be at 59 mil even if they amnesty Pau and before resigning Dwight. I think the rule is you can go over the cap to resign your own players(correct me if I'm wrong though).

Will get blasted, but I agree with Minnesota here.
Pekovic is a good player, but he isnt a great defensive rebounder, which the Hornets need badly, and I'm not so sure he's an upgrade over Lopez as a defender. Could be convinced otherwise, but I dont quite see it.
Certainly wouldn't be upset if they nab him. He is a better player than Lopez and a realistic upgrade, but I dont think he is the cure all some think he would be.

That's not how it works.
The salary cap is $58 million. If you are at or above $58 million then you can only use exceptions to sign people. Next season Kobe will make $30M, Howard will make $20M and Nash will make $10M. So just those 3 players put the Lakers over the salary cap.
Even if they amnesty Gasol they still would have a payroll of around $78 million if they kept Howard and Ron Artest picked up his player option. That puts them over the tax line and also puts them above the new $74 million tax penalty line which means they can't do S&T's. So even if they Amnesty Gasol they can't S&T for Smith if they keep Howard.

I really don't get the obsession by some with throwing money at Pekovic either. Davis is the center of the future so why would you pay a lot of money for what would essentially be the 3rd big? I could maybe see an argument for Al Jefferson as an expensive 3rd big, but that's only because he can create his own offense.

Davis is the center of the future, but we need someone to be the center of right now. Pek for four years gives AD time to grow, by that time he will be 24 yrs old. Pek leaves and AD steps in.
Regardless of if LA signs J.Smith, I still think they will amnesty Gasol triggering the Gasol to Minny, Pek to Nola move. IMO

Howard can't really be counted just yet, though. I, personally, expect him to bail on them.
Still, with no Howard, they are still at $79.7M. If they decline Meeks' option, they can get to $78.2M. If they do decide to amnesty Gasol, they can get to $58.9M, which is still expected to be over the cap.
So, they will be starting over the cap with the following roster:
Bryant
Nash
Middla Town Violence
Steve Blake
Chris Duhon
Jordan Hill
Basically, they need to trade Gasol or keep him for whatever value they can (unless the tax is that big of a concern. They are going to have to get creative to fill out their roster.

Then why would they amnesty Gasol just for the hell of it. The Lakers are not exactly hurting for money especially with their new TV deal.

I think you have to assume Davis is a 4 for it to be worthwhile. The jury is still out on that, in my opinion.

I don't see Davis ever playing center, at least not in the near future. And those 3 guys are only "bigs" based on their height. They are soft and all finesse.
Pekovic is a large, physical guy who plays with an edge. We have nothing even remotely close to him. And his offense is underrated. He scored 30 the other night if Im not mistaken.
He may not be the answer, but we would benefit extremely from a guy like him.
