I'll throw out one that hasn't been mentioned yet: Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Prepare to salivate.

Most of my favorite war-related stuff has an archaeological element to it.

Here's one you can watch in its entirety on youtube:

Time Team Special (2011) - The Somme's Secret Weapon

A team of archaeologists attempt to rediscover an enormous underground flame-thrower from WWI. They also construct a replica based on the plans for the original design. Really cool stuff. Only 47 minutes so it's a quick watch.

Some that I own, but haven’t watched yet:

Bigger, Faster, Stronger* – about steroids in sports.
This Film is Not Yet Rated – about the MPAA and some of the ridiculousness behind how movies are rated.
Touching the Void – about climbers that got stranded on an icy mountain, and tried climbing down and one fell and hanged there for like two days. Both survive but this movie is about them going back to the spots where they were and recounting what happened.

BFS is great as well as Touching the Void.

I actually found the Paridise Lost trilogy this past week.

Holy shite, those knocked me for a loop. Unreal. Watched the first 2, then West of Memphis. They remind me most of Dear Zachary. Not nearly as heart-wrenching, but holy shite they will piss you off at the legal system. For anyone not familiar, the documentaries are about three 8 year olds who are murdered and the three 17/18 year olds that are convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison and death, but may be innocent.

I don't see how anyone can call Dear Zachary a 'favorite' favorite, to me, implies that you want to watch and rewatch it many times over. Maybe "best" would apply.

Nah, favorite as in it's one of the ones I enjoyed watching the most. For many reasons. It made me laugh, made me pissed, made me angry, made me cry, made me laugh all over again. not many movies I've seen have done that. It's really good, despite some of the content.

And I wouldn't have a problem watching it again.

Civil War gets my highest recommendation.

"The War" has been much tougher for me to get into.

The excellent BBC series "World at War" I also recommend, but I'm not sure if it has made it to Neflix.

Also, both the book and film - Killing Pablo - Mark Bowden as the author and is the same author of Blackhawk Down and Guests of the Ayatollah.

That sounds cool; I'll prolly watch that one today at some point.

I really like war docs too, which is why I'd recommend The Rape of Europa...it was cool to me because when I think about war, I usually picture decimation of cities and whatnot...I don't really think about art and culture being destroyed as well. So to see the wartime history of some of the world's most famous and invaluable art was kinda cool to me.

I'm going to throw one out there that I saw at SWXSW a couple of years ago.

It's called "Cat Dancers". It's about a Las Vegas styled tiger and dance act. You're going to think in the beginning that VOR recommended some weirdo glitzy shite. But, trust me, stick with it til then end. What happens is fricking unbelievable.

the first thing i thought was...

Jesus Camp – interesting, and truly scary to be honest. It’s about religious fanatics and how they’re raising their kids to be SUPER radical religious people and what. Think the Westboro Church in Kansas type stuff

A few documentaries not mentioned that are very good are -

Exit Through the Gift Shop
The Queen of Versailles
Ai Weiwee: Never Sorry

Not war though and modern rather than historical but still worth watching.

"After Porn Ends"....a doc that follows some of the adult stars from the last 30 years trying to make the transition to "normal" life after doing porn. It features Asia Carerra, Seka, Amber Lynn, Mary Carey and John Leslie to name a few.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned "The Fog of War" which is a fascinating inside look at the period from World War 2 through The Cold War from the perspective of Kennedy's Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. I highly recommend this one.
