re: Randy Moss claims he's the GOAT WR

Is it really absurd to suggest that the guy who has the 3rd most Rec. Yards, 2nd Most Rec. TDs, but is only 9th in receptions is the greatest WR of all time? I mean, Rice took 600 more receptions to get the numbers he has. Doesn't that make Moss a LOT more dynamic?
Rice also played in vastly superior offenses. His QBs were Joe Montana and Steve Young. Moss was catching passes from Daunte Culpepper and Kerry Collins.

Well Rice played his career with Montana, Young, and Gannon. That's a solid QB list.
Right
And Moss made Cunningham in the twilight of his career look like an all pro
Ditto for Jeff George and he made Culpepper look good

Who gives a frick if he's more dynamic.
Please see my earlier post. If you want to talk about dynamic, then Calvin Johnson is the best to ever play
He gets triple covered like he's a gunner on punt coverage, is 6-5 and runs a 4.3
So do you see how idiotic that argument is?

No.
When you factor in that Moss did it for 12+ years and, again, is in the Top 3 of the major receiving categories, it should be factored in IMO.

Not to mention that Moss has been a hasbeen for three years
At the same age, Rice was murking opposing defenses
Rice will win this discussion every time, no questions asked

He compiled stats by staying in the league too long
Rice put up 869 yards in his second-to-last season with Rick Mirer as his starting QB.

You had some nice things going with that post until you did this

Moss is my favorite athlete ever. I think he is the most exciting player I have ever seen in any sport.
However, Rice is clearly the GOAT WR. I love Speedy's display of stats. Not only do they drive home the point, but they are so aesthetically pleasing.
I think I remember one time where Rice said he wishes he had Moss's talent. I wish I could find that. Nonetheless, Rice clearly had the superior career. I pretty much completely agree with iwy on this one.
Also, whoever said that Megatron will make people forget Moss is a fricking moron. That makes sense. Just like how Peyton Manning made me forget Dan Marino.

Moss is a great WR but can't hold Jerry's jock, even in his second life
Posted on 1/29/13 at 3:29 pm to jimithing11
As someone else said, this gets to be a topic for like another 3-5 years. Megatron will go down as the GOAT. More talented than Randy. Probably doesn't work quite as hard as Jerry, but is no slouch in that department.

Moss caught passes outside the hashes for most of his career. Only time he would go middle was over the top on a deep route.. Had alligator arms in the middle of the field. Rarely lined up as a slot in the middle of the field. Hardly ever blocked down field on runs or passes when his number wasnt called. Took plays off. WTF?
Could blow the top off of coverage sure. But is as 1 dimensional a WR as Ive ever seen.
I love arguments that devolve to " look who he had". Hypothetical arguments arent based in reality.
The reality is if you want to compare 2 similar positions in the NFL you have to only account for STATS and ERA.

You guys are just trolling right, when you say Moss > Rice. That's a joke, right?

I love how these things have become these kind of generational battles.
There is nothing Moss brings to the table that Rice did not. Rice unlike Moss however, did not take plays off and was a great down field blocker.
This has nothing to do with generational bias. I grew up with Jerry Rice, but older folks love to think that the greatest players played when they were growing up, and they act like younger people don't know what they are talking about.
The fact of the matter is these two players played in completely different offenses on completely different teams, and both were amazing.
Who is the best? That opinion can wildly vary.
ETA: Nevermind. I see your point, and I completely agree. :)

It really shouldnt even be an "argument".
Rice stats>>>>>>>>>>Moss stats
" I dont really live on numbers, I live on impact and what you are able to do out on the field"- Moss

Moss is a better athlete and had more potential. No one should debate that.
Jerry had the drive and was a complete WR. He could run maybe the best routes ever, block well, and had excellent hands.
Randy ran fly routes and has insane hands to go along with his speed and length.
It also shouldn't be debated that Jerry benefited from 2 HofF QB's in their peak. Moss MADE Culpepper, had an aging Cunningham, and only had Brady for 2 years (or 1? I forget).
Jerry > Moss because of all-around ability, stamina, and of course the outrageous stats.
If Megatron stays healthy, this is moot. He will shatter some fricking records before its over. He is bigger, stronger, and faster than Moss and Rice and has pretty great work ethic himself.

While I think rice is the better receiver there is truth to what he's saying. Randy moss at his best was jaw dropping. Rice was not
