So it's good if you compare it to crappy reality shows? I didn't know honey boo boo was the standard.
ETA: we're in a golden age of television btw.

The only time bs science took me out of a movie was GI jo. Channing tatum tries to fight a hologram. To make it worse, everyone holds him back. Ice sinks.
The movie is so bad it might be good.

Agreed. I watched the whole series and the movie in one night. I fell in love. Fox can suck a dick.

The machine on the rover is a head scratcher.
Why is there natural gas on an asteroid?
Why do they celebrate a blowout on the rig when in actuality the solution gas in that oil could have exploded and killed them all?
So many questions.
But I love Armageddon. We can drill 800 feet!!!!

No, I compare it to whatever the hell else is on at the same time. That's sorta how TV viewing works for the most part.

Thanks.
But if it is only 1 season I doubt I go out of my way to find it and watch it. Oh well.

Do you have Netflix? Series and movie are on it. Just rewatched the series recently.

hey figure out at the beginning that they have 17 days and change til the asteroid hits. Harrys platform is in the South China Sea. With ridiculous logistics, we assume the air force could fly Harry and Grace to Houston in 24 hrs. In that span, his whole crew has left the rig and gone home. Let's assume it takes another 2 days to get them all to Houston. They said they have 12 days to train in the movie. We're now at 15 days movie time. Now you have to stop at Mir and refuel. That probably takes about 12 hrs. Now you have to achieve escape velocity. It took Apollo 3 days to get to the moon with the most powerful rocket ever made. Those shuttles are nowhere near a Saturn IV. Either way, we're now at 18 days with a ridiculous amount of time management.
Distance from Earth to moon is 238k miles. I believe they said the rock was traveling at 25k mph. That's a 9 hr trip. Then wasn't the "Zero Barrier" 3 hrs? So you're gonna land, set up, and drill 800 feet in 3 hrs? Come on.
Many of your points are bad guesses. A brand new space vehicle capable of landing on an asteroid and taking off again is NO Apollo 3. This thing had to leave Earth's orbit and leave another body later. It had the speed to do the pit stop at MIR and sling shot the Moon to catch the asteroid. In a relatively short period of time.
About MIR: I feel that that whole sequence is pretty much real time, spare the time it takes to fueling the shuttle. Don't forget they had to evacuate.
I think the movie gave them just the amount of time that they needed.

Why? Harry gave them his plans for a drilling space rig lonnnng before this. And they had been working on it...that's how he knew how to fix them.

Why is there natural gas on an asteroid?
Why is there ethanol in space? Methane is a naturally occurring gas that can be abiogenic and gets trapped in ice crystals. Once these melt, CH4 can be released.

It was something exciting. It's Hollywood. The audience gets that motif.
Any other questions?

I think he was referring to the machine gun.

Do you know what this is?
It's for shooting steel (not pure steel) nails into concrete (hard rock mixture). If this were outfitted for drilling on an iron-rich planet, the technology could be used to pierce through layers that a boring tool could not under its own power.

I'm sad to say that I ruined this movie for my gf at the time by explaining all of the physical impossibilities in the movie

We all know how much quicker & easier it is to train roughnecks to be astronauts than to train astronauts to be roughnecks.
But I liked the movie.

You are so insufferable on the m/tv board.. good lord.
btw, Armageddon is a fun flick to watch if it's on, nothing more. I always look past inconsistencies, why bother myself with drivel that doesn't matter, it's all fiction in the end anyways.
besides Armageddon happened in another dimensions that that had been altered by Quinn and crew when they tried to stop the evil empire from corrupting the populace, which in turn caused the earth to move slower, therefore lengthening the days and caused a rift that allowed for explosions in space and faster than light travel.

I have movies that I feel this way about, like twister or independence Day. I think both movies are terrible, but I usually stop and watch if they are on.
I have never done this with armageddon. Just never liked the movie.
But as they say, to each their own.
