Was Spags being fired completely based on the worst defense in history...

or was it based more on the fact that Payton just wants to switch to a 3-4 defense?

Did he sit back this year and realize the 3-4 scheme is just more successful and may be better suited for our personnel? So he pulled the plug while he knew he could?

I'm all about the 3-4 defense back in the Dome!

If the D had played well this year, we probably wouldn't be switching to a 3-4. So, I guess it had more to do with Spags and the D's performance this past season.

I honestly think CSP is cleaning house.

He's probably furious after what he saw during the year.

Probably equal parts worst defense, and they all hated him, players and coaches.

I'm thinking it's a lot of this.

If we take SP's words on their face, then he fired Spags more for a change in philosophy than for performance.

But SP could just be being diplomatic.

7000 yards, bro. Over 7000 yards. I'm sure it had a lot to do with it.

I understand the 7000 yds and its kind of my point I guess.

He fought to get Spags here and never even got to coach with him so you'd think he would of given him another shot in his system. But somewhere during his suspension I think he realized that the 3-4 defense is the way to go, and if he was gonna make that philosophical change, it was now after Spags terrible defense. It's just assumption based on how he handled the situation these last 2 days.

Yeah, in a 4-3 defense

He probably thought back over the last three seasons and realized that we got shite pressure on the QB with four down linemen, so might as well make the jump.

Combination of a bad defense and seeing our def personel closer to a 3-4 with drafting for a 3-4 also easier. Add the trouble the Saints and CSP have had vs the 3-4.The worst def in history gives you the biggest opening to switch you could ever have.

One nice bonus is that our enemies atl TB and carolina have not seen this def from the Saints in a long time.

yeah they didn't play well which could be the reason why Payton decided to take a closer look at the success of the 3-4.

He could of easily decided to try and help Spags better our defense with another year, but I think he made up his mind that he wants the 3-4 after watching this season and noticing the results.

My only point is I think Payton decided the Saints will benefit from the 3-4 defense... so part of letting Spags go is based on philosophy and not just the worst defense ever.

So you're saying he is only gonna switch to a 3-4 just to save Spags a little embarrassment?

Pretty sure Spags would still be here if the defense was average last year. Instead, the defense was beyond terrible and CSP is kicking arse and taking names in the offseason.

I think Payton probably did a ton of research and watched a ton of film. Unless Spags completely set the world on fire this year, Payton was gonna go a different direction.

Uh, no.

I'm saying the way he framed it was that he had been wanting to switch to a 3-4 for a while now, and Spags is (to a large extent) an unfortunate casualty of that switch.

Payton had a year to focus solely on the overall direction of his team and didnt like what he saw on the defensive side IMO. In the past being so consumed with offensive gameplan, he was very hands off on defense which is a major reason for his suspension. That won't happen from now on.
