re: Engagment Ring $

Spend an amount that doesn't hurt you. The 3 months salary thing is stupid. If you have student loans, rent, bills, etc., 3 months salary could really put a hurting on your finances. I got lucky and had free room and board at my parents for 1.5 years after I graduated so I could save enough for a ring and 20% down on a house. I spent more than what most on this board would advise, but it didn't put a strain on my finances, so it wasn't a big deal.
And a girl may not need a fancy ring, but they sure as hell like them. If you are comfortable spending the money, I don't see a problem spending for a nice ring. It's a good feeling to get something really nice for the person you are going to marry. The key is being responsible, don't spend money you can't afford to spend.

don't buy something because "society" says you have to pay x amount for a ring. Depending on your financial situation that can be very stupid.
You shouldn't be starting your life together straddled with debt
all of this is 100% truth.

you can get a nice ring without breaking the bank.
there are a lot more important things to pay for when getting married and starting a life together

I didn't say that you needed to break the bank.
I just wasnt buying the asinine "Spend a few hundred dollars, if she the right one she won't care."

Potentially related to all this, I saved a ton of money by buying a nice diamond by itself, and then buying the specific setting I(she) wanted. That way you can get a ring that is out of your price range for a prie in your price range.
(I did have to know a jeweler to buy the diamond by itself, but I think you can do it as a regular person).

Bluenile.com
I've heard good things. Anyone ever buy a rock off of it?

I bought the setting and diamond seperate at a local independent jeweler.
Once I found the setting she wanted, I was able to choose a stone to fit it that was within my budget.
You can also save a good bit of money by going down a grade in stone. Many "imperfections" cant be seen unless your trained to look for them under a scope, and once they are in the setting many are hidden altogether.

Not going to get much for 2-3 but as others have said...it shouldn't matter.

Ordered mine form a jeweler in NY. Their website is since1910.com. They were very helpful and delivered on time.

oh, it will matter eventually.
I understand the mentality, but one of these days your wife is going to be in a group of hens standing around and she will want a ring that she is proud of, not 3 months salary for Gods sake, but a nice ring in a nice thoughtful setting.

Whatever you and your SO decide you like, be sure to shop around first. Unless you get a real big stone, the color and clarity can be skimped (a little on) because the setting will obstruct this. SI1 is about as low as I'd go if you are in the 1.5ct market. As for color G/H is a good bet. Keep in mind the approval authority GIA versus EGL.. (EGL is a for-profit entity and tend to have a little looser standards, not egregious but figure 1 to 2 'upgrades) (GIA G, VVS2 may be an EGL F VVS1). Also if EGL be sure to verify the location, EGL-Israel is notorious for inflating the quality. Google it, plenty of good articles on it. Also, if you aren't sure about the price you are being quoted, check bluenile.com for a comparison.
Good luck!
Good luck!

I spent $1k because I wanted something unique and my wife absolutely loves it - buddy of mine just spent $10k on his g/f's!!! couldn't believe it, but that's the difference btwn his girl and mine. mine doesn't care about a huge rock, and that's why I married her

three pieces of advice:
1) do your homework. Sites such as this one LINK will help a ton. Answers to all your questions are out there
2) shop online. I used Amazon to find well-reviewed dealers and then went directly the dealers' websites. I ended up buying from one of those. To say I got a good deal doing it this way is an understatement - it appraised at 2.5x what I paid for it.
3) buy a ring that both you and her will be proud of. EVERYBODY you know is going to see this thing and the last thing you want is either of you feeling subconscious about it.
