To that point, recently torchlight 2 came out and it was exclusively digital distribution and the developer said they made as much money on the game for 20 dollars as they did on a 50-60 dollar box copy of diablo back in the 90's.
Digital distribution is the future and in many ways it's completely here on the PC front. I still think there's a large amount of console gamers without great internet that we will still see huge amounts of retail sales for years to come. That plus having small hard drives in consoles.

Just like PC you could still have a physical copy option.

I always buy used unless it's a game I really want or series that is popular with me. I bought BO2, and BF3 new because they were popular multiplayer games that I would get alot of use out of. I buy used the games I want to play just for the single player.
I have a friend that buys games new all the time because he likes to collect the games. But he doesnt finish half the games and some never plays.
I just think its a huge waste of money. I'd rather save 30 bucks, play the game then trade it in for another.

I only buy new releases new. Everything else used.

Wow...really?
You want me to have sympathy when a company who does business nets $25,000,000 on a game? Sorry. If they want to capture the resale market then let them. Should all clothing manufacturers lobby to shut down Ebay for selling used clothing?

quote:you are just looking a gross sales. You have to figure in the inventory cost to GS for used games. Developers have no inventory/carry costs so their profit margin (net) will look a lot better than GS in this scenario.
I got curious after having a discussion a few weeks back with a coworker about used games and Gamestop's profiteering off of a developer's hard work.
Gears of War for example, sold 6 million copies brand new. The game retailed for $60. The likely breakdown in the sales were $10 to retailers, $25 to publisher (Microsoft) and $25 to Epic.
So Epic banked $150 million off of the game.
If gamestop sold 3 million of those copies, they made $30 million in sales.
Lets say that 1/3 (For easy math's sake) of the games get traded in, and resold at $55 used, gamestop makes another $110,000,000 from resales of used games and have now actually made more money from the game than the actual developers.
The reality of it is that more than 1/3 of those 6 million copies was likely trade in and resold.
Anyway, thats my outlook on used games and was curious who bought what and why.

profiteering??

A) Obviously not true
B) Youre nitpicking and derailing.
*sigh*

I used gears of war specifically in my argument with my co-worker because it was a $55 used title for almost 9 months after it was released and a $59.99 new title for just as long.
In this example I would buy new. More likely though I would search around on the internet for a cheap copy.
I buy Madden/COD new. Those are practically the only games I own throughout the year. I don't make much money and have a 2 year old, so spending money on video games is irresponsible as frick for me.
I only own 2-3 games at any given time, I'll sell games back for $5 to go toward my next game. Every little bit counts.
Like I said though, I barely ever buy games new. But I don't buy used games for $55 either.

lets say you're going buy something that came out last year, do you go for the new copy for $40 or the used copy for $35?
Ebay for less than that.

I only buy used during certain sales and such. Even then, I refuse to buy it without all the proper materials. Same goes for 'new' games that are not sealed, almost never buy it that way.

I buy them used.
I remember the coolest part about buying used cartridge games is you get the pervious person's save file if you get bored or stuck on yours.

If we're talking $5 it's the new copy.
But how often is there just a $5 difference in the new or used?
If it's a game that I didn't want to pre-order/get on it's release date then I'm probably buying used or downloading through PS. And I'm like Broke and Stout, the market is there for them to capitalize but they choose not to do so.
And in all honesty, if I picked something up used from Gamestop and I enjoyed it I'm far more likely to buy new the next game that developer produces. That's exactly how I got into Assassin's Creed.

I prefer new games, that way the developer gets the money.
Plus buying used games sometimes means you have to buy am online pass

I have gone mostly digital lately. I usually just look for the best deal. I am not against buying used but usually I can find it new on sale through amazon or someone else cheaper than GameStop used.

I use Gamefly so I guess I'm not helping the industry either.
I wish I would have signed up for gamefly way sooner. I love it.
That being said, if I'm buying a game, odds are it's brand new and I want it badly. I've stopped by Gamestop once or twice and picked up a few really old games here and there just to have something to play but I don't do it often.

I like to buy Game Of The Year editions. They have alot of the DLC in the game and they are about 20.00 new.
I usually buy new from Amazon. This works for me because I like big games and I have a life so it takes about 6-9 months to play a game. I just started dead red redemption and will play until June.
