In a division that just finished the regular season with 3 10-win teams, Arky and Auburn needed to make perfect hires. Neither one of them did that. LSU, Alabama and A&M will headline the division for years. LSU had a perfect season last year, Alabama is going to their 2nd straight NC and A&M has a Heisman finalist. How will Arky and Auburn out-muscle programs who already have a stranglehold on Louisiana, Texas and Alabama? How will they regain their footing in the hardest division in football?

They both needed big names. Dynamic, inspiring leaders with tremendous recruiting skills. Coaches who could shake up the division and get the most out of their current players. Nationally prominent coaches who have had significant tangible success. Progressive coaches who will bring sustainable, tactical success.

I'll at least give props to Arkansas for hiring someone who I thought was above their ceiling. That won't make recruiting any easier for him though. But Auburn? Oh Auburn. Auburn settled and their next 3-5 years will reflect that.

Wisky been pretty good over the last 5 years.

considering his recruits at Wisky, he already does this

3 BCS appearances?

Progressive coaches who will bring sustainable, tactical success.
Again, Wisky has won the most (or close to top) Big 10 games over the last few years.

Good coaching.

Yea i agree 100% man. I'm truly shocked by both hires. It's gonna get interesting if Petrino is successful where ever he ends up. If he tears it up it'll be funny as shite. If Malzahn hires a good DC, they'll be fine.

Gus makes no sense, point blank.

it's not like his offense was dynamic without Cam, shite LSU rolled that crap without Cam

Bielema is interesting. Don't know if it works because of recruiting

but the style if he brings from Wisky does work SEC wise. Top tier teams do what LSU/Bama do in this conference

we'll see. a little surprising, sure the pigs hate it

oh and 85-20 in the SEC>>>>>>>>>68-32 in the Big Ten

There's Saban (the best coach in the country). Then there's 2-3 outside if him that are consider great. You have to get what you can when you're looking. If I remember, Miles was so-so while at OSU. He turned out alright.

Another coach was hired some years ago from a Big 10 school that had performed only decently, in order to try and resurrect a floundering SEC program with a rich history. As I recall, that worked out fairly well.

A coach can only do what the available talent permits him to do. Lighten up.

The most questionable part of the Bielema hire for me is his established ability, or lack their of, to recruit Texas. I am not sure a Bielema hire does anything to get Arkansas in the door on some recruits from the metroplex or east Texas. Some Arkansas fans might disagree, but IMO recruiting this area is the biggest single factor to Arkansas' sustained success. He can overcome this with some great assistant hires, but it will take a lot.

So he better be ready to see the SEC style recruiting he bad mouthed nearly 12 months ago because it's coming whether he's ready or not.

Not that easy to get what you described.

Neither one coached a game in SEC and you already labeling them failures?

Beilema is a very good coach, and the jury still out on Gus. Both may work out well.

Wut?

ESPN seems to think it was quite the coup for Arky to hire away one of the Big Ten's top coaches.

Bret Bielema is probably a better hire than Les Miles was at the time. He won 11 games at Wisconsin last year. I'd say that's a lot better than what Miles did at Okie State. He's a great hire IMO.

Gus, however, is a bad, bad hire. Auburn needs someone who's a proven winner, not a guy still figuring out the things a head coach needs to know and do. Not too mention, he's not too far removed from being a high school coach.

Yeah fine but who could they have realistically hired?
What do you suggest? They would have to break the bank to get someone that fit the criteria you listed in the OP.

you do not know that. the problem with hiring a new hc is that you DO NOT KNOW WHO WILL BE A PERFECT HIRE (if there is such a thing).

the guy you describe should be running for president. you have thrown out a lot of generalizations that, imo, are hogwash (no pun intended). the phrase "kick-arse football" and "sustainable, tactical success" don't go together. really, who gives a damn if a coach is progressive? you need to put your thesarius down.
