re: Bielema and Gus are puzzling hires

Another coach was hired some years ago from a Big 10 school that had performed only decently, in order to try and resurrect a floundering SEC program with a rich history. As I recall, that worked out fairly well.
A coach can only do what the available talent permits him to do. Lighten up.

How does the comparison work when it's 'Bama vs. Auburn. Or Tennessee. Or Mississippi State? Is it a pro-Bama bias or an anti-LSU bias?
Your data is insufficient to justify any conclusion.

I just don't understand why we're supposed to be satisfied with mediocrity because we were awful 20 years ago.
I think you made the case against your position with the use of that one word. You define LSU's performance over the last 5 years as "mediocrity"? If so, then there is no point in discussing if it's ok to criticise mediocrity. The argument is over whether LSU under Miles is mediocre. And while that is somewhat subjective, you definitely have the short end of the stick.

It will be interesting to see who actually reads your thoughtful and mature analysis, and who decides it has too many hard words, prepositional phrases and commas to be taken seriously.
FWIW, I agree with you.

the so-called "negatigers" were the fans that said "frick this shite" and stopped going to home games in the hallman era and forced joe dean's hand to fire him ... then the "negatigers" did the same to gerry dinardo after his brilliant replacements of carl reese and morris watts ... so, in essence, the "negtigers" were the ones that told the administration that they wanted better .. and on came nick saban ..
The truth of this analysis doesn't mean that all critics are doing God's work all the time. Civil rights protesters in the 60's were a motivating force behind changes in the nation's laws regarding race discrimination. But we see the aging boomer generation that mounted those protests (my generation, as it happens) continuing to find issues to pick on not so much because they are truly significant issues in need of reformation, but because it's who they are to be protesters. I think there's a parallel here, with folks remembering how they changed bad into good at LSU thinking they should keep at it with the same vitriol, even when the good has become great.

And people wonder why no one reads newspapers anymore.
Putting aside the problem that newspapers have become, even on their "news" pages, apologists for whatever political point of view will boost their readership, people don't read "good" newspapers because they can't be bothered with detail. If it can't be captured in 10 words or fewer, it must not be relevant. Who cares about the knowledge necessary to an informed judgment? It's just so much noise compared with a photo of Lindsay Lohan's most recent arrest. Newspapers have become a dinosaur of a business model, and as they depart, so does the potential for an informed populace. It's all about the sound bite.

One of the things that jumped out at me was his use of the word "decadence" to describe the state of LSU football in the 90s.
I agree that Warner is in over his head when he tries to write a piece in this style. However, what I don't agree with is that there is no value to sports writing as good literature in the right context. Not all sports writing must be done in accordance with the basic rules of structure taught in fundamental English composition classes, the purpose of which is to drag people from illiteracy into basic writing competence. If you can find them, go read some of Herbert Warren Wind's writing in "The New Yorker" on various major golf tournaments, the Masters in particular. It's priceless.

Yet another voice from the generation that thinks using the English language properly consists of running spellcheck.

Warner isn't writing a sports story. He's writing an editorial opinion piece--perhaps the last bastion of moderately erudite writing in what's left of the journalism profession.
Students in "The Paper Chase" were in law school at Harvard. They didn't write term papers, at least not in Kingsley's class.
Succinct enough for you?

Absolutely. To hell with all this "run, run, run" crap. Air it out on every down. Run Statue of Liberty plays, and double or triple reverses with a pass/lateral option. Block with 5 guys and put 5 in the pattern. Be Oregon. Just one thing--better join the PAC 12.

the best team you have ever had 1959, almost lost to a mediocre clemson team
That was 1958 (January 1, 1959). Clemson was relevant then. That was 54 years ago. Whenever you have to go back more than about 4 months to find something to argue from, you've lost already.
[Edited to add:]Look folks, don't be too tough on the kids from Clemson. It's a nice little school in a very beautiful part of the country. The folks who go there are, for the most part, extremely sociable, kind and considerate. A bit backward, to be sure, but that can be cute as well. Let them have their fun. Apart from the annual "Big Game" with the Gamecocks, they have to play in the minors. Have some compassion.
