The Hobbit and LOTR are pretty accessible to everyone. I don't consider it "high" fantasy or whatever they call it
And I'm willing to admit that "it's not the movie, it's me"

I will freely admit that I just "dont get" this genre
I don't hate on it, but I just don't get it
I felt the same way until I started watching Game of Thrones. Well, I still think LOTR sucks but GOT is pretty awesome.

Well considering I read the book and the plot doesn't suck, this is a really stupid complaint.

I dont get the RPG's, the movies, the novels, LARPing, etc.
just a heads up, RPGs, Larping, and books like LOTR are all completely different from one another.
Larpers to the fantasy genre can be compared to prof bowlers in the sporting genre...

If there's one thing everyone is agreeing on, its one hell of a faithful adaptation.

so we should expect several 20 minute scenes of Bilbo thinking about tea time?

Judging from the previews, he seems to talk about home alot and what it means to him, to where I'm sure there will be a scene or two referencing it.

Game of Thrones is really different though. Even if you don't like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, that doesn't mean you won't like GoT. Its in a more midevil than magical setting, even if there is magic within the story.

you're doing yourself a disservice.
GOT is fantastic. The fantasy elements in GOT aren't near in the forefront as in LOTRs.

I absolutely love the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I have the extended edition. But, even I can honestly say that the LOTR trilogy is severely overrated. I came out of the first 2 movies feeling a sense of blah, due to the feeling of incompleteness.
I can see the Hobbit being even worse in this regard.

Well, because they were incomplete films. They were just 1/3 of the tale. I really don't see Lord of the Rings as a trilogy, just one really long film.

I think you may be right, which is why I will hold off full judgement until all 3 parts have been released. Lord of the Rings has obvious stopping points in the story, but the Hobbit doesn't really.

The problem here is they are adapting a book shorter than The Fellowship of the Ring into three films. The Hobbit would have done well as a single film with a length of about 3 hours or 3 hours and 15 minutes. From all the reviews I have read this film pleases the fans but is hardly a movie for the casual moviegoer. This is bad for me because, while I liked the Lord of the Rings films, I could NEVER get into the books because they were just too damn slow and boring.
I had to force myself to finish those books. I tried and failed to force read The Hobbit.

I really think you're thinking along the lines of something GoT isn't really. Watch the first 2 or 3 episodes, and if you don't get the feel for it, I'd probably quit.

I'm not worried about the Critic's reviews. I'm sure most of them will say something about the movie being too slow in the beginning, and doesn't live up to the LOTR, and too many characters, blah blah blah. frick'em all
Everyone said that TROTK was to long and complained all day. I loved it. It meant more of the movie to watch. It will be an amazing movie. I can't wait for the other 2. They said the ending will leave you

I'll reserve my full thoughts on the Hobbit for another two years until I see it as a completed work. Alot of reviewers hated Fellowship at first, but once Return of the King was released, they changed their tune entirely once they saw it as a completed work.
I remember when the Fellowship came out and people said it was to slow. Years later it's everyone favorite movie from the trilogy. The reviews I'm reading they love it. LOTR didn't attract the casual viewer and look how good it did. This will most likely be the same.
All the bad reviews are saying it that the 48FPS is it takes time to get use to. Here's an idea don't watch it in 48FPS. I wanted a review of the film not the 48FPS.

Think Lord of the Rings meets The Sopranos. Martin doesn't even pretend to have warm and fuzzy stuff in GoT.
