you can't target a player in the head like that no matter what.
A memo was actually sent out to teams about post-interception blocks on the QB this year saying that it wasn't allowed.
It was a point of emphasis to SEC officials this year. It would be at least a 1 game suspension in the NFL if not more
quote:
Alabama defensive lineman Quinton Dial should have been penalized in the SEC Championship Game for his hit on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, SEC coordinator of officials Steve Shaw said today.
quote:
After reviewing video, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive will decide whether Dial misses the national championship against Notre Dame, Shaw said. Slive has suspended two SEC players this season for hits that targeted the head of players.
quote:
"We missed the call," Shaw said.
Even though the ref was looking right at it
if the Ole Miss players gets suspended for his hit, he needs to be suspended
quote:
When issuing those suspensions, the SEC cited Rule 9-1-4 of the NCAA rulebook, which states: "No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder."

Can we do that? I'd love to see him mention this on nationwide tv.

But apparently not to Bama officials.

Once a QB throws an interception he isn't protected anymore.
BS. Helmet to helmet, no matter what position he plays. Unnecessary roughness if you don't like that one.

When the league office released the press release by Mark Womack, stating that the SEC schedule was a cooperative effort from all the AD's, Aleva specifically denied that he had any say so in the schedule. So, one of the two is lying. As for the illegal hit on Murray, watch the replay & there is a ref standing behind Murray, looking right at the players, & he ate his flag.

Helmet-to-Helmet generally only gets applied to defenseless players like a WR in the process of a catch, or a QB in the process of throwing. Running backs take helmet-to-helmet hits all the time, as do, obviously, linemen. More to the point, the rule mentions only leading with the crown of the helmet. Dial kept his head up and lead with his shoulder.
Unnecessary roughness is generally applied to hits levied on players who are out of bounds, nowhere near the play, or at the end up of a play when the ball-carrier has given up.
Murray was ambling towards the ball carrier, not paying attention, and he got blown up. He's about 7 yards from the play when the hit happens, as well, and moving towards it.
It was certainly a dirty hit, but it's not strictly illegal. If it was anyone other than the QB getting blocked like that no one would even care.

no it doesn't. He lead with the crown of his helmet, which is illegal.

The SEC sent out a memo saying they considered QB's post interception to be defenseless.
The officials have already said it was a blown call, not really anything else to argue

FWIW, I have a friend who refs at the college level who said he would not have called it. And he leads with his shoulder and makes contact with the side of his helmet.
But if the SEC said that they should have called it then I will stand corrected.

You stand corrected because the SEC said they should have called it. Now stop hijacking the thread.

boom....
there were several other pretty bad no-calls. The PI on Dix on the diving catch that didn't get called. At least 1 block in the back on a punt return. 684 holding non-calls

This is a bridge year. No bearing on future scheduling.
have you calculated the effect of the permanent opponent going forward? obviously not. LSU and florida are getting hosed. bama will not play more than one top team from the east ever and will play none most of the time.

Uhh, I'm pretty sure leading with the helmet is strictly illegal

Well, according to the SEC you are factually incorrect. They've already confirmed that it was indeed a penalty and should have been called

Dial being suspended for the nc game would be huge. But don't even look for Slive to come out and address it.
