I've said it before and I'll say it again, DeLoss Dodds is the "Jerry Jones" of athletic directors. There's simply no argument against that.
Except that Deloss can be fired and has no interest in putting in Victoria's Secret Store in DKR stadium.

So I'm left wondering if Applewhite is next HC or if next HC has agreed to retain Applewhite as OC. For sure Diaz is gone after bowl game.
Applewhite won't be considered for the head coaching gig unless his offense lights it up next year, but even then, it would be a stretch to promote him to HC without prior experience.

The only way he gets fired is if Powers is fired too.
It's essentially the same thing as A&M pre-2002:
It took Ray Bowen leaving and Robert Gates taking over to finally get rid of Wally Groff...and it took getting rid of Wally Groff to finally remove the last thing protecting R.C. Slocum.

I thought promoting Applewhite was a given. no way Mack could find a decent OC anyway given the state of the program and he's on his way out.

Maybe...I used to think this too, now I think Powers has bigger fish to fry beyond the athletic department. So while still unlikely, the right pressure brought to bear on Powers could make him force Dodds to "retire."
On the other hand I think Mack and Dodds are tied at the hip so if one goes then the other will too.

It was. Now the question will be how much of a shot does Major get to be the next HC.....

this is absolutely the case
Hastings said Diaz was on his way to Miami today, not sure if it's family related or work

I dont see them getting rid of Mack unless Texas finishs under .500 next year.
I think they are committed to Mack, and dont want to go on a coaching search right now.
So they will give the dude every chance to turn it around. As long as he gets to a bowl, and doesn't get beat to badly by OU then he should be fine.

do you guys honestly want this? Sounds like a disaster in the making. I like Major and all but you guys need to kick him out of the nest before bringing him back. You are too big of a program to hire an internal guy that has zero head coaching experience. Maybe 5-6 years from now if he stays on as OC/Asst HC for a bit.

The news I got today was that Major is essentially getting an audition to see how he runs the team coming into the bowl game. And make no mistake, he is running practices, which includes his input on the defense too. He's been granted more authority than just being an OC at this point. Its just one game and from what I've been told, the players are responsive to him - more than that, they are excited about it. So the Alamo Bowl is somewhat of an experiment. Even if the results are great, I don't think it translates into him being the next HC.

so big 12 fan, if major is supposedly running the practices does that mean mack is definitely out and if major isn't given the job who will be target #1

I heard Muschamp and now Fedora are at the top...this assumes Saban and Meyer are not legit options.
Shaw will be considered too.

Looking more and more like Nick is staying in Tusc, he was recruiting his arse off in Baton Rouge and New Orleans this past weekend.

I don't think Mack is going anywhere soon. With Harsin gone, Major was logical choice to be his replacement at this point in the season. As stubborn as Mack is, he still needs to energize this team if he's going to win the bowl game and the players love him (Major). Harsin is gone & Diaz is basically job hunting - Major has the energy, youth, and enthusiasm to run the show for the time being.
If & when Mack leaves, Petersen is most likely # 1 target if he's available. However, if Major's is hugely successful as OC, that could change, although promoting someone from within the staff to HC has never happened at Texas (as far as I know). Saban is not even in the picture. More likely names in addition to Petersen are Fedora and Patterson.
A lot of it depends on who is AD at the time. And that could change relatively soon too (within the next year). Oliver Luck's name has been mentioned as a person of interest in regards to that position. He was in Austin this past weekend.

Ironic considering that Dodds wanted Gary Barnett...

Yes it is. Some people think Barnett's "failings" at Colorado prove he would not have done well here. I don't necessarily agree. He may have exceeded Mack, who knows.
If, at the end of a legitimate coaching search that Mack is NOT involved in, Major is selected then I'm fine with it. But if he is Mack's chosen successor then I want no part.

I don't understand how Applewhite could even be an option when he's proven next to nothing as an assistant and you have ungodly amounts of money to throw at coaches on the open market. Applewhite would be a good candidate for a HC job at UNT or UTEP, not UT. So I will hope against hope you frickers are that dumb

But really Texas was one of the worst tackling major programs I have ever seen.
This year, it was West Virginia

I agree with you - my post above suggests that I'd be ok with Major...actually, I would much prefer someone with more experience. Major, for his own sake, needs to go the route you suggest and then, if he finds success, come back to Texas in the future (if he wants...by all accounts he wants to be the HC at Texas).
My point was that Mack's insecurity/ego is driving him to possibly "promote" Major as the next HC because, if Major is successful, Mack can sit back and take some credit for it. How do you think it looks if someone else comes in, let's say Petersen, and does well. Makes Mack look like more of an incompetent than he does now.

Gary Barnett wasn't fired because of his record on the field. He was fired because of the Katie Hnida bullshite and his count of an athletic director.
Colorado hasn't had a winning season (IIRC) since he was fired. That goes across 2 coaches.
