I'm not a big lyrics guy. For me, it is like 10% of the listening experience. Icing on the cake. But them some lines you hear and just have to hear them again, yes?

For me, here are three recents.

"I miss my mom and dad for this?"
-Fun, Some Nights

"But your boys have grown soft, and your girls have gone wild."
-Battle Born, The Killers

"And now I'm drunker than before they told me drinking doesn't make me nice."
-Passion Pit, Constant Conversations

Go!

"You run and you run, to catch up to the sun but its sinking.
Racing around, to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way, but your older.
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death."

"You'll never lose you're mind
As long as you're heart always reminds you
Where you left it

And don't ever let them make you feel
Like saying what you want is unbecoming
If you were supposed to watch you're mouth
All the time, I doubt you're eyes would be above it

So I'll meet you at the bottom
If there really is one, they always told me
When you hit it you'll know it
But I've been falling so long
It's like gravity's gone and I'm just floating"

Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice

Too many to list, as i think lyrics and music are inseparable.
But here are four of my all time favorites:

quote:

A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?

Juliet says hey it's Romeo, you nearly gimme me a heart attack
He's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it?

Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?

quote:

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize - we're floating in space -
Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

quote:

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange

quote:

All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon

There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark.

And the entire song Some Girls by The Rolling Stones

And The Times They Are A-Changin, especially this part:
quote:

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

I could go on for days in this discussion. And i plan to come back later

to me, it's the most important part. i could go on all day with favorite lyrics, lyrics that resonate, etc., but i will leave you with three selections

quote:

And you run and you run
To catch up with the sun
But it's sinking
Racing around
To come up behind you again
The sun is the same
In a relative way
But you're older
Shorter of breath
And one day closer to death
time, floyd

quote:

I love you more than can I tell you,
When you pass through from this world,
I hope you ask to take me with you
So I don't have to wait for long
But until then I'll be with you through the dark,
And until then I'll be with you through the dark
Who else can say that about you, baby
Who else can say that about you, now
Who else can take all your blood and your curses
Nobody I've seen a hanging around
Seen a hanging around
biloxi parish, gaslight

quote:

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
i will follow you into the dark, death cab for cutie

The Frontier Index by the Silver Jews

"When I was younger I was a cobra
in every case I wanted to be cool
Now that I'm older and sub-space is colder
I just want to say something true"

Random Rules by the Silver Jews

"In 1984 I was hospitalized for approaching perfection
Slowly screwing my way across Europe, I had to make a correction"

quote:

You were all that we had, your mammy and me
when you marched head erect you were proud as could be
but it killed your poor ma and it slowly killing me
when you were blown to kingdom come on the shores of Gallipoli

Gallipoli - The Fureys

quote:

But here in this graveyard it's still no man's land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man's blind indefference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered and dammed

No Man's Land (Green Fields of France) - Eric Bogle

Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

The Grateful Dead - Scarlet Begonias

Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky.
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded in on itself.
And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath."

The more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind.

Modest Mouse- The ocean breathes salty

A lot of Modest Mouse songs tend to have lyrics that hit a chord every time i listen to them

Well, these lyrics hit me one time but not in a particularly good way. I saw this band one time, don't remember the name but they were kind of a Lynyrd Skynyrd wannabe band. The lyric was something like this:

Skinny dippin' in the Chattahoochee
Got my fanger in yer sister's coochie

Now on the other side of the coin, for some reason I was struck by these Steely Dan lyrics in the song Caves of Altamira.

Before the fall
When they wrote it on the wall
And there wasn't even any Hollywood
They heard the call
And they wrote it on the wall
For you and me and we understood

He's talking about ancient humans living in caves and painting the things that were important to them on the cave walls. Odd subject for a song but that's the Dan for you.

I went into a restaurant
Lookin’ for the cook
I told them I was the editor
Of a famous etiquette book
The waitress he was handsome
He wore a powder blue cape
I ordered some suzette, I said
“Could you please make that crepe”
Just then the whole kitchen exploded
From boilin’ fat
Food was flying everywhere
And I left without my hat

and

I've got troubles of my own, I said
An' you can't help me out
So take your meditations an' your preparations
An' ram it up yer snout
"BUT I GOT A KRISTL BOL!," he said
An' held it to the light
So I snatched it
All away from him
An' I showed him how to do it right
I wrapped a newspaper 'round my head
So I'd look like I was Deep
I said some Mumbo Jumbos then
An' told him he was goin' to sleep
I robbed his rings
An' pocket watch
An' everything else I found
I had that sucker hypnotized
He couldn't even make a sound
I proceeded to tell him his future then
As long as he was hanging around,
I said
"The price of meat has just gone up
An' yer ol' lady has just gone down . . . "
Look here brother,
Who you jivin' with that Cosmik Debris?
(Now is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?)
Don't you know,
You could make more money as a butcher,
So don't you waste your time on me

Agreed. For the most part lyrics function as merely another instrument for me. However the careful selection of words is quite important to achieve the optimum sounds to accommodate the rest of the song. When the lyrics accomplish this and have some significant meaning, I guess it might make them worth paying attention to.

Right In Two

Silly monkeys, give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down

How they survive so misguided is a mystery, repugnant is the creature that would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here

Not religious but this puts a different perspective on life

Nick Cave ALWAYS does it for me.

This is from Darker With The Day:
quote:

I was looking for an end to this, for some kind of closure
Time moved so rapidly, I had no hope of keeping track of it
I thought of my friends who had died of exposure
And I remembered other ones who had died from the lack of it

And in my best shoes I started falling forward down the street
I stopped at a church and jostled through the crowd
And love followed just behind me, panting at my feet
As the steeple tore the stomach from a lonely little cloud

Inside I sat, seeking the presence of a God
I searched through the pictures in a leather-bound book
I found a woolly lamb dozing in an issue of blood
And a gilled Jesus shivering on a fisherman's hook

Babe It seems so long
Since you've been gone away
And I
Just got to say
That it grows darker with the day

Back on the street I saw a great big smiling sun
It was a Good day and an Evil day and all was bright and new
And it seemed to me that most destruction was being done
By those who could not choose between the two
