doubtful, but that would be nice
Disney is not George Lucas. Granted it would only be on sale for 3 months before they shoved it back in the Disney Vault, but they will almost certainly make it available at one point or another. They're all about making money, and releasing an unedited version of Star Wars on BluRay would do it.

I'm not going to ruin some of the good book series just because Disney made a movie.
you idiots who think the books will factor in one iota in the direction of hte new films need to go back to your dungeons and dragons games. nobody cares about the books. they make take a few ideas from them but they will not use those books as the basis of scripts/plots. you are fooling yourself if you think it will happen

Chill out dude.
Have you read the books? No. Neither have I, but people eat tha crap up. I don't think it's that ridiculous for someone to think that maybe a little book material/idea would be taken into account. You contradicted yourself in back to back sentences. You idiots who think one iota! will be used you're an idiot I'm sure some material will be used you idiots.

they were suggesting the plots/stories from the books will be the "stories" for 7-9. it will not happen. they make use ideas (like a setting, a character, a planet) but those book stories are not going to be a part of these new movies.
I'm so glad they are looking at original content. This is hte best direction for the film franchise.

The PT used EU ideas, such as Coruscant, but also contradicted things, such as the origin of the Death Star. I expect it to be the same with the new movies.

I hate that they are calling these 7-9.
Just consider them a new take on them. Maybe that's a stipulation in the contract though. I say I hate that, but I have always said Star Wars and LOTR' are movies that should never be touched/remade. But if Lucas is willing to sell I guess he doesn't care.

Precisely. They might lift a character or two they think is neat, maybe steal a setting, but anyone who thinks the plot is going to follow the books is deluding themselves. It won't.
The audience demanding fealty to the books is quite small. Hell, it might even be numbered in the hundreds. People are simply not going to refuse to watch Episode VII because it contradicts the novels. Very few people care, and the ones who do care will likely see the movie anyway.

They're still giving Lucas some creative input. Kathleen Kennedy is the new owner of Lucasfilm Ltd. and she is a very good friend of George's. If you watch the video announcement the two of them made today you will see that she wants Lucas to stay on as a creative consultant. Plus, Lucas has given Lucasfilm and the creative team working on Episode 7 story treatments for 7, 8, and 9. He may not be the writer or the director, but the man will still have SOME input.
Some input does not mean he has the final say in everything like he did in the prequels. This time, most likely, he won't have an entire team of people that just bow down to his every whim and instead can overrule him if something he says is stupid.

2) We're probably getting a BluRay release of the Original Trilogy unaltered
Fox will still have distribution rights to the OT and PT, from what I understand. So that will be up to them in conjunction with LucasFilm/Disney I guess.
Disney will have exclusive rights to anything new going forward. And merchandising and the like. Hence, why they will be making new films.

I don't, but why the frick should Vader have anything to do with 3PO and R2D2?

100% agree. Anyone who thinks the books will factor in is a lunatic and doesn't understand how things work at all.
Disney doesn't give a single frick about the books.
We need a picture of Grand Admiral Thrawn with mouse ears on that says "Not a Single frick Given"

This. They didn't just spend 4 BILLION dollars on LucasFilm not to exploit any and all profit avenues.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here:
All future Star Wars films will be in 3D according to Bob Iger. So, there's that...

Also found out that Pixar cost Disney 7.4 billion dollars, and I'm surprised Pixar is worth almost twice what Lucasfilm is, especially since this purchase is coming with ILM.
Merchandising from Cars brought in $5 billion in revenue alone. Still surprised? Mind you that's $5 billion in merchandising from 2006 to 2009.
ETA: As of February of 2011, merchandising for Cars brought in over $8 billion of revenue. That was before the sequel. Friggin Cars alone paid for Disney's purchase of Pixar.
