recommended Leupold...the guy at the gun store was pushing Zeiss...
Zeiss makes outstanding equipment, but, for the money, I'd choose the Leupold. I have a Leupold VX-1 and a Vortex Diamondback, both in 3x9x40 and am well pleased with both. I rarely ever take a shot over 100 yds. though, so it sounds like you'd want something a little more powerful. Whatever you decide, don't be afraid to spend a little more for a better scope and mounts. They're well worth it.
As to the rifles you described, either should be accurate and reliable. It's just a matter of what feels most comfortable to you.
Just don't let the salesman talk you into a Remington 770. They're pathetic.

Excuse me for not making myself clear you fricking snob. The man is a first time gun owner and I not gonna suggest he goes out and buy top of the line rifle. They are plenty fricking good for a new shooter to hunt with from here on out. Everyone is not into 1000 $ rifles to hunt with

Quite a few arse hats will argue different points on all three calibers. My only suggestion would be to get comfortable with whatever rifle you choose. I feel that as a sportsman we owe it to the animal to do all we can to make a clean shot. Any caliber legal for deer hunting will prove lethal if the shot is on target.
Nice to see you over here. Can I take this time to nominate Ole Geauxt as OB moderator??

I have one of each and enjoy them both. As far as flatter shooting they are almost identical and ammo costs the same.
Hornady now makes a extended range 165 gr load 30 06 that hits 2800fps with no more recoil than normal which is very manageable. I have different scopes on them is how I decide which to take where.

That's the thing though. You don't have to spend a thousand dollars on a rifle to have one that you actually can turn into a laser beam. In fact a lot of those super expensive rifles are also in the not the best gun out there category.
You can buy a baseline Rem 700 and you've got it. The rest comes as you decide you want to do it. Granted, that's a matter of how deep you want to go down that hole, and there are others you can do it with as well, but you're the one that stated Tika and Savage were the best guns out there. That's not even close to correct. Sorry if you don't want to hear it.

I am in Houston. You can shoot my 300 win mag in a Weatherby.

I have the New Model 70 Featherweight in 7mm-08 and a new Browning X-Bolt Stainless in 270 WSM. Out of the box accuracy goes to the Model 70 looks goes to the Browning. I like the tang safety on the Browning which is the deal breaker. Tang safeties are just the right way to do safeties. Also being able to unload the rifle with the safety on is an obvious need

Savage makes a great gun for the money. I would go with the 30-06 if you eventually want to hunt bigger game. Best all around big game caliber in my opinion. Nikon makes excellent scopes for a reasonable price. Don't skimp on the optics. Redfields also makes high quality budget scopes.

Out the box, the average tikka will outshoot the average 700.
That's a fact jack.

If you're only going to shoot whitetail and are looking at less than 250-300 yards, you can't go wrong with a 270 or 30-06.
Personally, I have a model 700 Remington in the 7mm. If I ever (hopefully) go elk hunting, then I want need a bigger gun.
Also, I'm not a perfect shot (aka, buck fever), which means that if I don't make a perfect placement with the shot, the 7mm is going to do more than enough damage to kill the whitetail. I've never had one run more than 75 yards after the 7mm met their flesh. In fact, most have dropped right in their tracks.
Good luck, Chicken, and don't kill them all

No caliber can make up for poor shot placement.

How did I miss this thread??? Has no one recommended a judge yet?
caliber: .270, .308, 30.06 all great deer cal.
Brand: Remington, Winchester, Savage all great reliable
Scopes: Leopold, Nikon, Ziess
7mm mag can really destroy a small to med deer. A bit too much on them.
Good luck Chicken, if you make a kill, post it here!

Get a remington 700 in .270, shoot a 130 grn. bullet, top it off with Leupold glass bullet and thank me later.
