Just routine maintenance and cleaning out deer stands this week-end and found where buzzards have been roosting in one of our best stands. The stench is overwhelming. Buzzard crap everywhere. Any recommendation on what to do to kill the smell? I mean this stink will literally make you sick.

There isn't much that will work....

Blech/ammonia combo is a good place to start...

I would suggest burning it and putting up a ground blind.

Had the exact thing happen to me. My stand was a metal frame with wood sides and floor. Ended up having to replace the floor and two sides. The smell was insanely sickening! They are some nasty creatures!

Rub mentholatum under you nose and leave it to air out naturally. Killed my biggest buck to date from a stand that had become a buzzard roost. Yes it's a foul odor but probably makes an excellent cover scent.

It's a box stand with four windows. We had roll down screens over each window, but somehow those got torn off. If you've never had this you can't imagine the odor. Gag a maggot and burns your eyes like ammonia. Bad.

My dad has a story about a time he decided to mess with buzzards. 20 years ago on a country road, he was driving back from a maintenance call on a natural gas rig. It's dusk and he spots a wake on the side of the road feasting on a deer carcass. My dad is bored so he decides he is going to floor it, flash his lights and lay on the horn to frick with the buzzards. Bad idea. He failed to account for the fact that these buzzards were heavier than usual. The wake is slow to take flight because they are so full, one hits the grill of his truck slides of the window and pukes rotting deer down his a.c. vents. It's also the dead of winter....so he can either freeze his arse off or smell hot rotting deer and buzzard gut stew..moral of the story don't frick with buzzards...

I had no idea they would even do this. I have a few open window stands I am going to make covers for. It must be their crap made from rotten animals they eat.

I also have a stand named the "buzzard stand", a 4x4 box stand on t he ground, and after 2 years of airing out, it is just now decent enough to sit in. We just removed the chair, scraped / swept what we could and let it naturally air out.

Twice I've had someone leave a window open at the end of the season in two of my 12' tower blinds where hawks roosted over the winter. The worst had crap 2 inches deep on the floor. I threw out the craped on rubber floor mat (wore rubber gloves) then used a square nosed shovel and filled up a 5 gal buckets to remove the rest followed by a long handled scrub brush and soapy / bleachy water. Then added a new rubber floor mat and it was fine.

<==== also HAD a "buzzard stand".

Ended up sacrificing it to the buzzard gods. No way you get that stench out.

Obviously, there is no one on this thread who ever had chicken houses. Ammonia is just what bird crap smells like. Just clean it off, let it air out, suck it up and hunt out of it.

Is it just me, or does "Buzzards in my box stand" sound like the beginning of a really kick as OB poem? Not a "roses are red, violets are blue" type of poem, but something along the lines of "The Road Not Taken".

Buzzards in my box stand
Not sure what to do?
Clean it with ammonia
Paint it anew?

Buzzards in my box stand
Stench causes water in my eyes
I've got 3 inches of buzzard shite
To shovel and sterilize

Buzzards in my box stand
certainly madness is mine
the ultimate tresspasser
where the heck is Tiger79?

Buzzards in my box stand
now I can't hunt
I only hope Green Jeans will step in there
And the fricker get stuck.

Next time i'll lock it up tight
hopefully a friend will give me a hand
and check it more often to prevent
Buzzards in my box stand.

sorry.. that's all i got.

I would make sure they aren't around. We found a buzzard nest a few years back on the ground. My dad was taking pictures of the babies and the mom flew over and tried to throw up on him.
