Man, make sure they cant get in for a while, then once theyre gone, clean it good and air it out for a year or so. In the mean time, put a climber up close and enjoy the natural cover scent.

Have you tried diesel and a match as a scent remover?

My dad has a story about a time he decided to mess with buzzards. 20 years ago on a country road, ... dad is bored so he decides he is going to floor it....moral of the story don't frick with buzzards.
Similar story. Back in '85, a buddy of mine was screaming down a blacktop country road in his brand new Mustang GT (leather interior). There were some buzzards in the road, but he figured they'd get out of the way. At 100 mph, one buzzard wasn't fast enough.
Buzzard hit the windshield head first, somehow punching a hole through the windshield (instead of glancing off). Though the main carcass of the bird stayed outside the windshield, much of the buzzard's guts came up through the neck and mouth, into the interior of the car, splattering all over the place.
Horrid stench. Long story short, even after replacing the entire interior, insurance finally totaled out the car because they could never get the stench out.

Buzzards in my box stand
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it just me, or does "Buzzards in my box stand" sound like the beginning of a really kick as OB poem? Not a "roses are red, violets are blue" type of poem, but something along the lines of "The Road Not Taken".
Believe me when I tell you that as I was standing in the middle of all that buzzard crap poetry was the last thing I was thinking of. Good job though! I'm hanging this in the stand!

I had had owls and buzzards. At least with buzzards its only turds, owls keep a large pile of rotting animals in your stand as well. Just sweep it out and you will get used to it. Just take a big whiff and let it soak in. Think of it this way, you won't have to use any scent cover-ups anymore.

Going sit in an nasty owl stand on Friday. They had a bunch of eggs in there when i cleaned it a week ago and i stepped on them. Jesus that rotted egg smell on top of dead animals on top of owl shite was horrible

Look on the bright side, you won't have to worry about using cover scent when you hunt that stand.

Try OdoBan from Home Depot.

Any recommendation on what to do to kill the smell? I mean this stink will literally make you sick.
Most all taxidermy supply companies carry odor killing products. And they work. Go online to the WASCO site (Wildlife Artists Supply Company) and search their online catalogue. This is the first one that comes to mind. There are a lot of taxidermy supply companies available to search. These are professional strength odor killing products. I have used this product before and I can vouch for it's effectiveness. You can't get these products at this strength from Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.

Here is one odor killer product and is the one I have used with great success. If it will kill skunk odor, I would think it would take care of your problem:

Here is another: Haven't tried this one, but there are others out there besides these two. Go to www.taxidermy.net for a listing of all the different taxidermy supply companies. Some of them carry different odor killer products. Hope this helps! LINK

It is not nearly as slippery as I have always been told.

Bleach the hell out of then hit it with peroxide baking soda mix in a sprayer. Use a LOT!
Be sure to remover everything out of the stand and don't reuse anything with out disinfecting. My bother worked with a guy that had this happen and his kids got bad sick from a parasite in the pop.

Went out yesterday afternoon with a portable pressure washer. Had a 25 gallon tank we dumped six gallons of clorox mixed with 19 gallons of water. After spraying everythjing down and ruining a shirt and pair of pants we emptied six boxes of baking soda into a five gallon bucket of water and scrubbed/brushed everything down. You couldn't smell anything but bleach when we left so maybe this will work. Actually, I'm still smelling bleach this morning. Probably can't hunt this stand till Christmas. I hate buzzards.

quote:I'd go ahead and order some of that scent killer from the taxidermy supply house. It'll kill the bleach scent. Don't get that stuff from Lowe's. It has a eucalyptus fragrance. I'm sure the deer will clue in to that eucalyptus odor. OTOH, the bleach smell will go away fairly soon if you leave the windows open, but then, the buzzards might get back in again? I bet that was a nasty mess to clean up... Probably bad enough to gag a maggot off a gut wagon.
Actually, I'm still smelling bleach this morning.
