I'll throw out one for the old cats like me: The U
1986: 11-1, lost NC game 14-10
1987: 12-0 NC
1988: 11-1 lost at NC ND 31-30 (missed 2 pt on last play)
1989: 11-1 NC
1990: 10-2 #3
1991: 12-0 NC
1992 : 11-1 lost NC game badly this time
7 years: 78-6. 3 NC's, 3 #2 finishes with only loss to NC and a #3 when quite frankly they were probably the best team

Miami never won a big game outside the state of Florida. When they went on the road, they lost. That's the knock on that run.
Impressive as hell, though, especially cuz it came out of nowhere.

The Wide Right years.
FSU might have more national titles if they had a FG kicker. Finished #4 and #2 respectively.

Probably the best (unless a they faced a team with an injury to a key player along the way).

Yeah, Miami's only won one bowl game played outside the Orange Bowl during their national championship years and that was in 1989 against Alabama. Their bowl record was less than stellar when they weren't playing in the Orange Bowl They got pounded by Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl in 1985, lost to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl in 1986, and got manhandled by Alabama in 1992.

So two conference championships in 5 years? In the last 20 years I would say USC, FSU, and Nebraska have had more impressive runs and Miami, Oklahoma an Florida have had comparable runs.

They really choked that Fiesta Bowl vs Penn State. They should have mauled that team. In fact they did statistically but 5 INTs killed them. Not too often your superstar QB completes less than 50% of his passes and throws 4 picks that you have a chance to win at the end with the 5 pick in the end zone at the end of the game.
In 88 a Notre Dame they got hosed on a bad call even one of the refs said it was a good case for instant replay.
ETA: They did beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl in 89. They "won" the MNC because Notre Dame beat #1 Colorado.

Almost as impressive as our run from 2010-2015
Hypothetical of course....

or if they had gotten a rematch
FSU also had a big lead in 87 and blew it in the 4th.

It's impressive but they could also only end up winning 1 sec championship in that time.

Penn State realized in the game tape that if you got Tesdeverde to 3rd and long...he only looked at his primary receiver all the way.
Their whole game plan was to shorten the game with their ball control on offense...stop Miami's run and get Tesdeverde to 3rd and long...when PSU would bring in extra linebackers as DB's.
And you're right, despite all their mistakes, Miami still had a chance to win at the end...that's how more talented that Miami team was.

My heart sank when that fig left the dolphins and came back in our division because I knew it would be bad for us. Now listen to the negafricks here and my nightmare has been realized.

There's always something with Bama that feels like they get the breaks in winning NTs while some teams have dominated in the past and didn't win the title.
You mean like this?
64 They win NC but lose bowl. In fairness all prior AP/UPI NC's where awarded before bowls, but Arkansas was 11-0.
65 AP decides to wait until after bowls to name NC. #1, 2 and 3 all lose, guess who is #4. Though at 9-1-1, they still had 4th best record.
73 UPI is still giving NC before bowls, so Bama splits title with Notre Dame, who beats Bama in Sugar Bowl. UPI starts naming NC after bowls the following year
78 11-1 Bama splits title with 12-1 USC who beats Bama 24-14 in Birmingham
That's just the poll titles.
There's a certain irony that Auburn is the exact opposite, getting hosed in 83 and 2004.

Even if they don't win this year (which I don't think they will), they'll be the favorite for 2013. So it could be 7 losses in 7 years and 3 national titles.
I could easily see us winning it this year and next. We're stacked next year with 3/4 rotating Safeties coming back, 3/5 main LBs guaranteed to come back, with another one possibly coming back, and 1 starter DL coming back with one guy who sees a shite ton of PT in every game and another who sees time late. OL will have Cyrus and Steen back, so it will be the weakness of the team, but it'll still be good enough. AJ should be back with all of his WRs, plus we add more. We lose BMW at TE, add the Tide Towers. We probably lose Lacy at RB, add Henry, Tenpenny, and Jones.
eta : Oh, and Belue/Fulton should both be back.

Jerry Sandusky
Hell of a DC. Hell of a coaching job in that game. What ever happened to that guy?

But current SEC is way tougher than the conferences they played in during their time.

They really should have dominated that game too.
That Alabama team they played in the Sugar Bowl overachieved all season. George Teague was just a freshman then. He had a pretty bad game that night but man alive, did he redeem himself the next time those two teams met in the Sugar Bowl.
I think Alabama's current run has been impressive but not the best. They really layed an egg in the Sugar Bowl against Utah. Had it not been for Javier Arenas' punt return, that game would have been a lot uglier than it was. They just seemed like they weren't into that game.
I thought they were way too conservative against Texas once they got that big lead in the title game.
The 2011 Alabama defense was the best one I've ever seen them field. They look to be a tough team to beat again this year but I think they aren't as good as last year. For an O-line that was supposed to dominate, I'd say they have underachieved as a unit so far.

Yeah...that.
Which is why I don't count dominance by MNCs. Whether it's the polls or the crazy BCS...luck and sway factor into it.
Bama during their run under Saban has been very consistent, dominant on D but very conservative and they don't beat themselves. It's strange, but I don't really feel a WOW with their run like I have with similar runs in the past. If they had won 4 SEC titles during this run...then, you'd say WOW, dominating the SEC. The strange circumstances of the BCS loses some luster.
