Beckham fumble????

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I didn't find it in search...
Could someone explain what the rule is when the officials blow the play dead while a fumble is still rolling on the ground?
I just watched a replay of the game and that's exactly what happened when Beckham fumbled. The ref blew the play dead while the ball was still rolling on the ground.
It was only after that, that the Florida player recovered.
If a referee blows the play dead while the ball is still rolling on the ground, shouldn't it go to the team that last possessed it prior to the "inadvertant" whistle?

Yeah he fumbled
Then why bother posting because you didn't answer his question at all.

It is bullshite. But it was a a fumble. The rule (at least in the NFL) is a clear recovery. You could argue things may have turned out differently, but it was a pretty clear recovery.

I was wondering the same thing. Also, I have a serious concern about our youth that a 5 sentence paragraph is too long to read.

No. And I would have felt bad if this was the case. Florida deserved to get the ball there.

They can overturn a fumble on review if it is obvious who recovers it even with a blown whistle.

I don't know the answer to your question, but he was waving the ball around like a loaf of bread before the tackle. Fundamentals. Attention to detail. They matter.

Is something different in college than NFL, because in the NFL this isn't true.
Happened in the Saints game last week against the Packers in the 4th quarter. Clearly a fumble but it couldn't be reviewed, not only because McCarthy was out of timeouts but it couldn't be reviewed because the play was blown dead. If a whistle is blown signaling that the play is dead, the play can't be reviewed (at least in the NFL).
ETA for anyone thinking that I think LSu should have retained possession. No. I am talking rules here, not complaining that it was a bad call because it most certainly was a fumble.

I was/am confused by the ruling as well. No doubt OBJ fumbled before he was down. But in this case the ref on site was already signalling the end of the play before UF recovered; poor officiating.
So how long after a play has been blown dead are the players allowed to continue playing?

I remember Beckham quit after the whistle blew. Don't remember if the Fla guy fell on it or picked it up and started running. If he was running Beckham could have stripped the ball from him. Not sure if this was what you were asking.

Down by contact call is not reviewable in the NFL, but apparently is in college.

Not true. NO/GB fumble could not be reviewed b/c GB was out of reviews....if it had been in the last 5 mins of the game the booth could have called for a review.
clear recovery of a fumble can result in a change in posession regardless of whistle blown by ref (in NFL). Believe it is the same in college.

Yep, the only thing the whistle counted for was not allowing the ball to be advanced. You can still overturn the possession.

I assume you missed the 2 and hit 5 by accident because it definitely isn't 5 minutes.

I have always heard other wise.
They specifically said during the Saints broadcast that it couldn't be reviewed anyway because the play was blown dead. If a play is blown dead and is declared "down by contact" I do not think that it can be reviewed in the NFL.
College it clearly can be.

Dead Ball and Loose Ball
ARTICLE 3. Reviewable plays involving potential dead balls and loose balls
include:
If the replay official rules that the ball was not dead, it belongs to the
recovering team at the spot of the recovery and any advance is nullified.
This is the rule, but it's fricking bullshite and needs to be changed. Every player has been taught since Pop Warner that when the whistle blows, the play is OVER!!!
By this rule, that is obviously not true.

From the link JaxTigah provided:
quote:
c. Live ball ruled dead in possession of a runner when the clear recovery of a loose
ball occurs in the immediate continuing action following the loose ball.
1. If the ball is ruled dead and the replay official does not have indisputable video evidence as to which team recovers, the dead-ball ruling stands.
2. If the replay official rules that the ball was not dead, it belongs to the recovering team at the spot of the recovery and any advance is nullified.
Not sure if these are quotes from an official rule book are not but they're leave a lot of ambiguity on the field. I mean, how long is the "immediate continuing action" allowed? Had the UF player's first attempt to recover it been bobbled, is he allowed a second attempt? Could an LSU player approaching the play get in on the action?

even in the NFL you can recover a fumble after the whistle blew, remember the KC game when we ran it back for a TD??? The rule in the NFL is the same as in college, if it is reviewed and ruled to be a fumble with clear and definite recovery by the defense then it is the Ds ball. The reason Sproles fumble in the packer game (other than GB having no challenges) is that there was a big pileup that wasnt cleared for at least a minute so no clear recovery was made.....
