Fine Wine in BR

I have been in the service industry for almost 8 yrs now. I spent 4 of those years bartending in various spots in br. I currently am working at a winery and gaining a wealth of wine knowledge. I would love to at some point make my way back to br and try to educate people of br on wine. Will br ever be a viable wine market or will it always be a beer and burbon town?

your wine market is in nola because of the better restaurant industry. Until BR elevates their dining opportunities, that will not take off as much.

Don't waste those years of experience and work trying to 1) change an entire city's culture, and 2) cater to a very small market which is both spread out and hard to quantify.
If I were you I would start out in a more progressive or at least affluent city.

I agree with your point. I was in br from 06-10 and I could never understand the serious lack of fine dining in br. The thing is that it didn't even have to be what got typically thought of as fine dining (white table cloth, pre set silver, stemwear, etc...) Just a place with a refined not over complicated menu with a 50-75 bottle list comprised of boutique California wines with some old world stuff peppered in. There is enough money in br to afford fine wine.

The BR market has grown in fact over the years. A Martins wine shop would not be on Perkins if it hadn't.

Because the upper middle class left the city to move to the sticks.

I'll have to agree with this
I'm always surprised at how educated the guy here at SPECs is in CC. The food culture here is pretty much abysmal.

Here is the thing is that martins on Perkins carries a bunch of easily brand recognized napa wines. I have news for you there is much more to California wine than silver oak and rombauer.

And you think there are enough people who care about that in Baton Rouge, Louisiana .. enough people for you to make a career out of offering your knowledge and services there?

If there is one thing I have learned in my years of experience is that when you show passion for something its infectious. When you infect someone with the "wine bug" its hard to get rid of. Then it can be very lucrative. I understand its a little bit of a pipe dream I just think at the right time with the right people it could be something really cool.

This is the South, most people here would rather California drop off into the Pacific Ocean, much less drink their wine

That's why most of the south is close minded and ignorant. I would love to be that ambassador. Someone from the south who learned it but can also relate back to his fellow southerners.

I don't think you are being very realistic. I would love for cities in the South to become more cultured and more cosmopolitan in some regards, but the demographics simply won't allow for it.
Same reason you're not going to open a fine wine shop in rural Nebraska.

Well we aren't standing in the way of your dreams
If you think you can do it, then go for it

Yeah, don't use this approach.

True story: When I was driving through Kansas last year, there was actually a gas station where you could do a wine tasting.
Wine tasting in a gas station convenient store just seems wrong.

Do any of you that consistently post on this board have any interest/passion for wine? Have any friends in that category?

Search some of the threads on here. We have some good thread sometimes about wine and yes there are some very informed posters on the subject.
I love wine and attend tastings and such a couple of times a year. I just don't truly have the budget to get into the nicer bottles.

I completely agree. At some point, doesn't someone need to take a "leap" to get the ball rolling? Who's to say that just because they're aren't any others like it in BR that this won't be successful. I'm sure that the first guys that wanted to start a food truck here met the same warnings, now look how many there are.
Start the revolution brother.
