The Freys violated a sacred oath of the high houses of Westeros. Robb did as well with spurning the Frey girl.
I always wondered why Martin had Rob do this - besides later learning it was motive for TRW. At the time I read it, it seemed very Martin-like to demonstrate a young Stark repeating prior Starks' missteps. Here was where I really started to question the kidnapping story...and realized Jon was NOT a child of rape...then TKotLT iced that cake- to me, anyway.
I have a theory that Skagos's bad rep is only defensive propaganda. Kind of the opposite intent of "Greenland". Geographically, the majority of the main island's land mass lies South of the Wall, parallel to both Gifts, but well North of Winterfell - suggesting a cold but not full on brutal climate. It is an island, however, and ocean currents can have bizarre effects on climate...at least for parts of the land mass, if not all. I want to believe it will be Martin's Austrailia or at least Madagascar - wildlife and greenery different from anything found on Essos or Westeros, but with similar species as well.
I picture it more of a "winter wonderland" than a "club med" but I wouldn't be surprised to find it is a well-ordered society with laws and independent government, operating for generations outside the King's rule - Hence, distasteful enough to the free folk to prevent a mass immigration.
Hell, it could be where most of TCotF ended up, and are still there.
All that imagery I got from the unicorn dream. Haha.

well started another go through of the books a couple days ago and am in the first book to the part where ned discovers arya has needle. he proceeds to lecture her and talks to her about his father, brother, and sister. he then says arya looks a lot like his sister lyanna. well it is said numerous times before that point and later how much jon and arya look alike... just found that interesting as another bit of kindling to the jon is lyanna's son speculation.
oh and after another go through knowing to look for renly to be gay, it's pretty obvious. at one point early on barristan the bold describes renly as a prancing jackanapes. and it talks about how renly buys more fine clothing than anyone else.

Crackpot ASOIAF Theories SPOILERS
haven't read anything in this thread, but I watched season 1 episode 2 (9mins in)and the Queen said that she "Lost her first boy" a "dark haired beauty" that "he was a fighter", "he fought the fever that took him"
(never read any books, so only going off of TV) Seeing that made me think a few things:
did she poison her kid because he had black hair? She knew it to be Baratheon, so she poisoned the kid(her MO), so that a full blooded Lanister would succeed the throne.
She says that they took his body away and she never saw his body again, "never even visited his crypt"
So this would have been before Joffrey.
Theory....Jon Snow is that child

Yeah, if you missed them the first time through they'll be tons of little jabs here and there that make it pretty obvious. Outside of Ned pretty much every major character that talks about Renly seems to have some little jab about it at some point.

Nope. All wrong. It was a legitimate son of Robert Baratheon, the only one she ever had. The writers make it out to be the reason Robert and her hate each other.

why because you read the book?
Ned does say to Jon, "you may not have my name, but you have my blood, you are a Stark"
which doesn't necessarily go against my theory.
Ned's sister(RBaratheon's 1st wife) and Robert had an infant child(black hair boy). Ned's sister dies and then Robert marries Cersei Lannister. She poison's the kid to get rid of him so that the throne will be inherited by her heirs. the Hand maiden, Wylla , who Ned was supposedly fricking, saved the child and told Ned to raise him otherwise the queen would kill him?
1.I just think that there's something about Jon Snow and this secret mother
2. That Ned's philandering was apparently out of character .
3. Boy died in similar fashion to Jon Arryn(hand of king that found out about the incest)

Robert never married Ned's sister. He was just in love with her. Cersie was his first wife.

This. Unless you don't mind being spoiled to all of the books.
One thing I got to say:
Rubies in the water.
