that timing just doesn't flow, IMO. the middle episodes are build up episodes. if that were the case you'd have joffrey die and the rest would be way to strung out.
Season 3 is going to be the build up season. Season 4 should be action packed and not let up til the very end.

quote:i've never been big into this genre but i do love the game of thornes tv series. i liked the lotr movies decent enough but never read the books. i'm reading the hobbit to try to get excited for the movie but i got to say i am extremely disappointed in it and don't see the big hype of tolkien. i'm 3/4 done with the book an it is extremely meh. i see the lotr verse compared often with the GOT verse. tell me this wont be a repeat of my tolkien experience

I thought the exact same thing. I've now read all five books twice. I think it is impossible to not enjoy the books.

(a) I don't think GRRM has much of the same tone as Tolkien.
(b) GRRM is much more concerned with the geo-political struggles and backstabbing. His focus on religion is secondary and is largely focused on how religion is a mechanism for control. Tolkien is more concerned with the meta-physical, spiritual, and Christian aspects of his stories. The Hobbit is, in many ways, a drawn out David v. Goliath story.
(c) LOTR is filled with the fantastical. As ASOIAF continues, more fantasy based elements are introduced (dragons, magic, zombies), but the focus remains on the characters and the mystical supplements, rather than drives, the story. LOTR and the Hobbit uses the mystical as allegories to the Bible and other Christian writings that influenced Tolkien.
(d) ASOIAF is generally more exciting. The pacing is faster, the use of multiple character POVs keeps things interesting by allowing GRRM the use of cliffhanger endings to each chapter that won't get resolved until 5 chapters later, and the violence and sex are described in more detail.
In sum, GRRM is a much more modern author and it shows. Tolkien is from a different era and it shows. I, for one, love both Tolkien and GRRM, but I don't think disliking Tolkien will equate to you disliking GRRM. My wife is the same way. Not a fantasy person, but has enjoyed ASOIAF.

as far as the LOTR books go, i am really disappointed in the hobbit. should i stay away from the LOTR books or is there a major difference in them from the hobbit?

There is a major difference in them from the hobbit.

This but if you don't like the hobbit at all I can't really imagine you liking LOTR either. It might be better for you but I doubt you just love it.

While Tolkien had lots of action, his prose was a bit lackluster in describing things. The Rings movies finally made sense of what he was trying to do. GRRM leaves nothing to the imagination (in terms of action and sex), and is more fun to read. In that regard.

Mmmmmm mulled wine, jellied eels and a bowl o' brown. Oh, and lemoncakes for dessert.

he doesn't have to be. all he needs to be around for is the trial.
He will need to be around a little bit before the trial if you buy into the theory that he poisoned Tywin before Tyrion put the crossbow bolt through him.
Although, I guess they could make it work with him just showing up for the trial.

Haven't heard this before. Is there talk of suspicion of that in the book? Is that why Tywin's body smelled so bad?
But didn't Viper die several days before Tywin? Can't remember the timeline.

There was a meeting with Tywin, Oberyn, and I think Kevin at one point. The thought is that is when he did it. Also, yeah, because his body smelled so bad, that is why people think Oberyn poisoned him.
Also, another twist is that it is possible that Tyrion knew. As he walks into the bathroom, the story narrates that Tyrion went to the room where he knew his father would be. That seems a little odd. Why would he know his dad would be taking a shite.
