2001 Nebraska offense.....Can it work today? Why or Why not?

Watching these highlights made me realize Crouch was definitely deserving of the Heisman in '01. I never was a big fan of his, but watching these, he makes it look like HS highlights.
It makes me wonder why precisely 0 teams run the old school Nebraska I form option. it's not like it completely stopped working. This offense put them in the NC game (I know maybe they didnt' deserve it, but still my point stands) in 2001. They had a bad year in '02 going 7-6. But they rebounded to 9-3 the next year despite the school going full retard and firing Solich.
So, I know the argument is that defenses are too fast nowadays. Why does the spread option work then? If Wisky can run their pound it straight at you game, why can't a team run the I form option? Were defenses not fast enough in 2003? Hell, 9-3 was pretty good then IMO. They lost to a 8-4 Mizzou team on the road, got a beating by a 10-3 Texas team on the road, and lost to Kansas State who upset #1 OU that year with Darren Sproles. They beat the shite out of most everyone else that year, including a #24 9-3 Les Miles OSU team.
The crap that Navy and GT run is NOT what Nebraska used to run FWIW.

eh...if they play cupcakes like they used to...i doubt it would work in the SEC...well maybe you could win 8 or 9...but doubtful a title

any offense can work if you have the right players imo

It didn't work so well in the NC game.
However, not many offenses were going to be effective against that defense.

Watch 95 Nebraska's highlights. That was the best team of all time.

if you have the right players you could run the 2001, 1995 Nebraska offense with complete success today
Nothing substantial has changed RE: player quality in ten years. We're not comparing a 1905 team with a 1985 team

Some of its because teams felt they needed a balanced or more passing to recruit since the NFL is more and more of a passing league, a kid might think his chances of making the NFL even on the OL might not be as good if he doesn't learn to pass block.
some of its because more and more HS's are running spreads.

Absolutely, but if you get down two scores you're pretty much fricked. Though Nebraska vs Colorado that year was awesome

This is an interesting question regarding whether or not this offense and the program can return to elite levels.
Look at their roster from 2001. It's not as though all the players are from the Sun Belt states like Texas, Cali, and Florida, like the CU teams in the 90's and as those players began staying home the SEC teams got better.
There are a handful of guys from out of the region but many are from Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, and Kansas.

I don't think there's any question it can work... you've got to pair it with a lights-out defense, though (which obviously Neb did for the most par)... there are tons of kids out there who aren't going to play QB in the traditional college offense, and who are set on playing the position, that can run option in college...
There are unique offenses all around college football (imo, one of the main reasons i find it more enjoyable than NFL).... GT's option to the pirate's air-rade... all can work to varying degrees.

In the 90's, Nebraska had the best S&C program in the country by far. If Osborn wanted to run the Pirate Spread like Leach runs, and recruited the right players for it, he would have gotten similar results.
Or he could have installed the right players into a pro-style offense and won too.

i.e. it takes a Heisman caliber QB to make it effective
Nebraska ran the veer option, mostly out of the I formation. For that to work you can't have any major mismatches going against you. Your QB has to be faster than the OLBs and if you're playing against an elite defense you're essentially screwed. The secondary is going to be good enough to take out the pitch guy and the defensive line will eat your lunch in the middle and your fullback won't be a threat.
For the triple veer option to work, all 3 have to be a threat. Call me crazy, but I can't imagine many teams having any success with the fullback against Bama or LSU last year.
