wasn't the cox center funded by the university originally and not the athletic program?
No, athletics paid for it.

They waistin Money on SCHOOL!! Mama says education is the DEVIL!!!!

To make matters worse...our former coach was the one who pushed to have the Cox Center created from the old fieldhouse.
I'm proud our Athletic Department is self sufficient and able to support the University. It makes LSU stronger.

The Athletic Department should be independent and the academic side should figure out a way to succeed without the AD's support each year.

If your neighbors house was on fire and you had the ability to help extinguish the fire would you help?
What if, in a freakish coincidence, you had a neighbors house catch on fire every year and, through good planning and good fortune, you were able to help extinguish it, would you help?
Would you help or would you watch it burn to the ground while screaming, "the original architect of your house should have built it better"?
Of course, if you chose the latter you wouldn't be out any money or effort to help save your neighbors house; unfortunately, you would now live in a neighborhood full of burned out useless homes.
Doesn't it seem the wiser move to help prevent the fire in the first place? I think the gift from the A.D. to the school is a prudent move to help prevent the fire before it starts.

Agreed, you can't look at it like welfare, you have to look at it like floating your brother some cash when he's down.

Excellent, but this is probably going just to academic support services for student athletes.

5.5 million vs how much profit. sounds like a bargain. meanwhile you all love lsu but elect an a-hole that is drowning it in a tub. i feel saturated with ignorance just from reading this.

Some of you will complain about anything. Unreal.

I agree with all of this. But I can't help but think that the hippie liberal professors who were raising ten kinds of hell about the contract that Les got a few years ago and the money spent on football. They will also say that athletics should do this, but if the shoe was on the other foot would they be willing to help athletics? I suspect that they wouldn't.

cademics is the backbone os the institution, not athletics. AD has to do this and continue to do this.

...refreshing to see this ...somebody's got to step up to save LSU from the disaster of Gov. Bobby "The Exorcist" Jindal ..
Posted on 7/21/12 at 11:47 am to GeauxGus
The relationship between the academic side and the athletic side of LSU go hand in hand. LSU needs all the help they can get now. I think cutting LSU funding is really going to bite Jindal in the arse. LSU is just one of those things you don't mess with. Hell, Long did about everything wrong you could do but he took care of LSU and is immortalized.

I agree and I wish someone could step up and save Nicholls State and all the other university that are in trouble as well. To bad our athletic's are in the red every year.

After two years of living in Houma I've come to see how important Nicholls is to the area. I'd love to see them prosper and I'm glad my business has started to sponsor them monetarily.

Athletics is the backbone of LSU not academics. Without a successful athletic program you are an afterthought.
Think about LSUs rise over the last 10 years. Football and baseball have ignited the masses not the engineering department or some kick arse science project.
The academic side has tremendously benefited from athletics. Those professers were immediately muzzled. I guarantee you.
Know your roll at the table and ride the wave.

Athletics is much more significant to the success of the university than anyone gives credit for. From a media perspective, to an application standpoint, etc. The athletic department shouldn't subsidize the academic side to this extent when athletics is an arms race, the academic side can't figure out how to properly manage a budget, and the athletic department is successful.

I agree that they shouldn't have to go this far but the budget cuts were pretty deep. Hopefully this amount is a one time deal but those odds are low.

Then the university needs to chance their source of revenue, flexibility to make changes as an institution, change the structure of the four-year university system in Louisiana and budget matters from a legislative lobbying, etc. perspective. Fundamental changes should occur and continued taking from the athletic side is unacceptable to this extent.

I agree 100% with this. LSU needs to make some tough cuts on the academic side.
In LSUs defense Bobby made a tremendously deep cut at the end of last session. Small cuts over time can be managed but big cuts all at once can cripple places.
People around here say Nicholls is in bad shape. People don't know what they have until it's gone. I hope someone steps up before its to late.
