Okay...I'm one of those stereotypical fanboys who has held The Dark Knight up on a pedestal since its release. But last night I watched Batman Begins for the first time in a long time and was very surprised at how well it measured up to its sequel. Batman Begins is an awesome movie in its own right. It's smartly written, very well paced, and carries with it a lot of symbolism that I hadn't noticed in prior viewings. In fact, after watching Batman Begins last night and critiquing it as I went, I have to put that film on the same level with The Dark Knight.

I can now see why there are some people who prefer Batman Begins to The Dark Knight and I don't blame them one bit for doing so. Batman Begins is a well-crafted film that is entertaining all the way through. I think that's a sign of a good pair of films when there are some fans who like one film better than the other and others who like the other film.

Watched it again for the first time in a while myself last week, and I really enjoyed it. But it did reinforce my belief that Liam Neeson is a very overrated action star. Was watching some of the fight scenes, especially when Bruce is training with him, and I have no doubt now that Jason Bourne would wipe the floor with him

Batman Begins might be the better movie from a technical perspective (I don't care if it is or isn't), but TDK will always be better than BB for one reason: The Joker/Two-Face > Ra's al Ghul. I'd always rather see an iconic villain over a more obscure one.

Begins is better. I've always maintained that. From a pure story telling/rewatchabilty perspective, Begins blows TDK out the water.

While I agree with this, it reinforces my frustration with Nolan underusing Scarecrow. That was one creepy mother fricker that deserved more screen time, imo.

I am watching the 2 before the TDKR. I watched Begins last night and most of TDK. I've seen TDK about 5 times already, so I doubt I'm going to learn anything new.

I really liked Begins this time around. TDK has always seemed a little busy and clumped. Begins flows throughout even with the flashbacks.

That's what makes this the understatement of the year

I've always liked Begins a little bit more but that could be due to the fact that I went into the theater with zero expectations and walked out very impressed. As someone said above, it just had a better flow to it.

TDK is an excellent movie and I watched it this past weekend for the first time in a few years. I always thought the 3rd Act was a little rushed but now I don't really think that. My only problem with the movie is that it really sort of steered away from being centered around Bruce. I also didn't care for Maggie Gyllenhal. The Rachel in the first movie was a much better character.

If TDKR is as good as the two previous movies, it could make a case for best trilogy of all time....but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

One last thing...

TDK has some really really bad sound editing...I think it got the Oscar for that too. I've always hated it. SFX too strong in some parts, can barely hear the characters in others. Track is too strong.

When I first watched this in the theater I could barely make out what the characters were saying over the soundtrack...and when trying to really pay attention and tune my ears there'd be a BOOMING sound effect. It carried over into the DVD.

Anyone else notice this?

TDK had too much going on. Eckart was terrible and hi performance especially in the 3rd act was abysmal. Teh hospital scene with Ledger became totally cartoonish in a world that was supposed to be "real" according to the fan boise.

The ending just didn't deliver like Begins. Begins is a superior film and story all the way through.

I've never heard this argument before. I'm fine with someone not liking an acting performance. But saying he was abysmal is ridiculous. The dude was not abysmal. So one scene with some comic relief takes away a possible claim for it to be a real ish superhero movie. Out of all the scenes that's the one you think takes away the real factor? He dresses as a nurse, shoots a couple of people, and is completely fine with blowing his brains out if it happens. The scene made you laugh but also showed what a psychopath he was. Far from cartoonish.
