I didn't say they were defending a pedophile. A pedophile is somebody who is attracted to children. JoePa, to my knowledge, is not this. I said they were defending a child abuser. A child abuser is somebody who abuses children. JoePa is this. He abused them by neglect.
Point taken but again at that moment none of this was known. They were stupidly acting on emotion. I've said before they made the PSU community look crazy.

First, I think you know you are fighting a battle that you are unable to win. I get that you aren't "defending" Paterno and are trying to help outsiders understand the process PSU and their fans are going through.
Here's your problem: we just can't relate. We can't understand 1 man being a team much less the entire university. The fact that you had a single coach for 61 years and your entire self identity was wrapped around him is mind boggling to us and is completely outside our understanding. Our identity is tied to our state and the program not a coach or player.
This is why We consider PSU's cult is very different from ours and we can't see our culture allowing for something like this to continue for so long. We have idols here without a doubt. But we have no problem tearing down those idols if they don't meet our standards... To a fault.
I'm not bashing you. I'm just trying to help you understand that using an analogy comparing PSU's situation to something happening at LSU (or any SEC school, really) doesn't help your case. In fact, it makes us more firm in ours. It is precisely that culture that allowed 1 man the power and the identity of the university that we don't understand or trust. What has been your hallmark is what we blame.

I still think Bear would've knocked the hell out of a coach of his that did that. Same goes for Cholly Mac.

Ehh child rape is on another level. Id be glad to send les miles or nick saban packing. frick i would send them packing if we ever got caught with serious infractions leading to post season ban or forfeit of games. Penn State fans are sick for joe pa. i understand why, but they are living in delusion.

grrrl....this is an absolutely superb analysis and you've explained the cultural difference in a way that i knew in my gut but couldn't put it in words as clearly as you have.....

I think so, too. However, that's what PSU thought about Paterno. The real difference is in the isolation of power and identity of the program.

People did want to run Miles out after the NCG. Just saying. I guess its calm now, but I haven't lived in Louisiana in a while.

Great post LSUGrrl. That really sums up everything.

That's true, but LSU might be the outlier in that regard. Our stadium is Tiger Stadium, as opposed to BRYANT Denny or JORDAN Hare or Neyland. We don't have an iconic coach. Our most successful football coaches had short tenures (even Les has only been here 7 seasons), and football is king. Dale Brown never won a national title. Skip Bertman is to LSU baseball what Joepa was to Penn State Football, but baseball isn't on the level of football in terms of prestige, and LSU was on the map nationally long before we had a good baseball team.
One point I made in another thread is that Penn State fans desperately want to believe JoePa was a good man. He's the only winner they've had in a major sport, but more importantly he had a public image of winning the right way. Penn State was supposed to be an honorable program, unlike the Oklahoma and Miami teams that embarrassed their universities with their off field conduct. Winning with class is a source of pride and Penn State fans have had that taken away from them.

Before all this shite hit the fan, the consensus by many, if not most, here was that JoPa was senile, crapped on himself, and was not even coherent enough to coach a high school football team. He was, in essence, said to be just a figurehead.
So, can someone explain how this senile old man who could not wipe his own arse and on the verge of full blown dementia (as noted by the masses here) is first in the line of responsibility being Sandusky.
FWIW, I am not defending JoPa at all. I believe he is second or third in line. I never thought the first paragraph applied to JoPa, so there is nothing for me to resolve. But I am interested in how others resolve the dissonance in these two seemingly conflicting notions.

bestbank, you are making valid points as well...
however skip bertman hasn't spent 61 years in baton rouge and even if he did, amazingly enough there is level of oversight which is far beyond anything seen at penn state....

but, he wasn't senile when all the sandusky stuff went down 10-15 years ago...

BBT - I don't disagree with what you're saying. However, none of the SEC schools are as isolated culturally as PSU. Even our combined identity as SEC is an example.
I fell very bad for the PSU family. (I feel worse for the victims and their families.) When this 1st hit the media, I immediately thought of LSU and wondered if our rabid passion for our football program could allow the same to happen at LSU. I really struggled with my zeal for LSU football possibly creating the monster the enabled the abuse at PSU.
Then I considered the degree of accountability we demand. Christ, we demand blood for every perceived mismanaged call. We debated for an entire season when our QB got into a bar fight. Bama can't sneeze without Auburn calling them boogerhead. We nearly lost our head when Petrino cursed at our coach on field - replaying over & over to read his lips.
When I saw the rioting in response to Paterno's termination, that finalized it for me. While some might argue on message boards that is was unfair, the real story would be the angry mob on Miles' front lawn. The fan base would immediately separate themselves from Miles and the discussion would be mainly about who would be the replacement. We would hang our heads in shame. Hell, I still have a hard time holding my head up after the NCG.
Ultimately, though, we would not need to believe in the innocence of our coach bc our program isn't just about Miles. The very fact that they need to cling to Paterno to recognize their own success is at the very heart of what went wrong there.

I don't think he was a real head coach, but it certainly seems like he knew what was going on.

Mr. Tom Morrow, I have read the entire thread and hats off to you because you have been very civil IMO and you make some valid points. Obviously, there are passions that run on both side of this argument and this will continue. I do believe the JoePa statue needs to come down but as you stated in due time. Certainly would be a contigent
that would go back to the streets rioting and being destructive if taken right now. Hopefully, as you posited, cooler heads will prevail and the JoePa legacy will be removed from PSU.

Did you read the Freeh report? Why do you think public opinion of him has changed so much this last week. The investigation found that he actually talked the rest of the administration down from going to authorities. The whole "after talking with Joe, I feel like we should discuss it only with Jerry" email.
Up to that time, people thought he was only guilty of not doing something, which can be understood if one is senile. He actually had an active role in the cover up it seems. He is absolutely the second most guilty one here, behind Sandusky.

Wow, PowerTool, going back and reading some of your posts that you linked to, its almost like you could see something coming. As you kind of stated, just something about JoePa that you didnt like. Man you hit the nail on the head. Thanks for linking.
