The Fish ID thread got me thinking, what's the coolest/most unique/unexpected fish you've ever caught/shot/netted? For me, the first time I ever went snapper fishing I caught a Bigeye/Glasseye Snapper. I was young, and the captain told me that he'd never seen one in person before, so, of course I felt like a little badass

NOTE: The ever-elusive Louisiana Walleye does not count

I once caught a red snapper and was the talk of the town for years. First one caught in decades. They are so endangered

I know they're just like Jacks for them, but to have one mounted would be awesome

Whitefish and Westslope Cutthroat trout.

It was really more of the fishing trip on the Flathead that was awesome but the were pretty neat to catch.

ETA: Tarpon on the fly in MX was pretty awesome as well.

unexpected - caught this eel. I thought I had a really nice grouper by the way it hit the bait and stayed in the structure...I thought it was a big grouper that had his gills flared as I could not get it to move for 10-15 mins.

If I had to take him off I would of cut the line. My buddy took him off.

That same trip we caught a pretty big bearded cusp...had no idea WTF it was, we kept it and the meat was white and very tasty...

I've heard that the eels taste like the Cusp...as the are the same family... ...I was not going to find out
