Maybee its because I live on the coast now but I have heard of WAY too many accidents/drownings this year.
There is an extreme level of stupid on Maurepas this year.

That Amite area is a very dangerous place on a Summer weekend please be careful out there. I didn't realize 25-30 people a year lose their lives boating every summer there...
15-20 years ago Dateline or one of the other news shows had a story about boating....LP was the most dangerous county/parish for boating. I don't know if that is still true.

I have basically sworn off Maurepas/Lower Amite because of the level of stupidity that happens down there on a daily basis. Getting a drunken sunburn is just not worth dying.

I haven't been in 10-15 years. I am amazed there aren't more collisions.

I talked to someone on the scene of the accident. The guy was anchored on the sandbar and another boat hit his anchor line accidently with the prop. The guy got pissed and wanted to go after them. He started the motor and had someone hold a course for him while he jumped in the retrieve the anchor. Well, we know what happened next. I can't imagine how he thought this was a good idea.
The other accident was a drunk who was riding solo, fell out of his boat and drowned. They found the boat going in circles in the middle of the lake.

So he tried to get in knowing the boat was in gear?

That is what I was wondering. Kind of sounds like it. If that is the case, this tragedy could have easily have been avoided.

That seems common.

Sounds like he dove in off the bow, and the person at the helm had the boat in gear. If the guy at the helm couldn't see him in the water it would be easy to pass over him...
Very sad...

I still don't understand how the anchor got knocked into the water. Was anchor sitting on the bow and they just had a bunch of anchor rope out? Also, didn't it say he was getting in from the back?

Indeed sad, but I just don't see how you think it is a good idea to put the boat in gear, dive in, and try and get back in the boat. It's an unfortunate event that could have been avoided, can't imagine what the family is going through.

I am thinking they were anchored....boat ran over rope cutting anchor off. Guy jumped in to retrieve anchor and since the boat likely drifted the boat operator started the boat and put it into gear to keep away from other boats. Likely from the commotion he forgot to take it out of gear and the guy was hit by the prop. That is my theory.

The anchor fell into water that was only about 3 to 5 feet deep, so Grayson dove down to grab it, Einck said.
The article said the anchor fell into the water. Of course, the newspaper could be wrong.

Yeh my theory takes into account the reporter has no boating experience and they make tons of mistakes

True, and there's a lot in that article that doesn't make sense. The writer has to be totally wrong about the anchor falling into the water.

This is not a regular sandbar that you are probably thinking about. This is a place in the lake that is shallow and has a sand bottom. The boats go in this area and anchor. The boat is in two to three feet of water. This may clear up what happened to him for you.

If my anchor fell in the water I would just grab the rope and retrieve it
