It may be the correct call but it was a chicken ---- call. Had the runner known that ball four had been called he could have stopped running and walked, at his leisure, to second base with no problem. But simply because he didn't know and was trying to steal, he slid past the bag and was called out was pure BS by the ump.
But is the base runners job to...,,, you know what...never mind.

its also not the job of a fielder to put his foot in front of a bag when someone is awarded a free base. I'd like to see the rule.
it was unfortunate. umpire wants a game 3 so he can get paid more $$$. heard someone say this when walking out. not sure if true.

Text the runner while he's on the way to second?
Yeah, numbnuts. He should text the runner. God forbid the umps do their job and call the game in an effecient manner. Is that seriously too much to expect? Have we become so apologetic on this board that being upset at an ump's lack of ability is considered "rude"?

It's hard for people to understand because the officiating crew looked like a bunch of dumbass clowns - especially the infield ump. He acted like it was strike three on the batter. WTF?
That's kind of like a guy faking a tag. Just not needed in the game of baseball. Infield ump should have been called out and replaced for "travesty to the game of baseball."
Something tells me this idiot won't be anywhere to be found on Sunday. He needs to be more aware than that.... However, you cold argue in his defense that the home plate ump didn't do him or anybody else any favors. He could/should have let us all know it was ball 4. It was kind of obvious but then again.... It's baseball and LSU is playing. Always an adventure! Bring it on for Sunday!

Don't think any of this is against the rules. But feel free to submit it to rules committee.
Well to be technical, and I do mean technical, it was obstruction.
Because he was awarded second base on the walk, the entire thing becomes a pickoff play. well, here it is in the rule book.
quote:
SECTION 54. Type 2 Obstruction: A.R. 4: On a pickoff play at any base, the defensive player must clearly have possession of the ball before blocking the base with any part of the defensive player’s body. The umpire will call “That’s obstruction” and then signal and call “Time.” The ball is dead immediately, and the runner being played on is awarded one base beyond the last base he had attained before the obstruction.
So technically, he should have been on third base because he blocked the bag before he got the ball.

Or once again, technically just on second base because I misread the last part about last base obtained before obstruction. That would have been first, so should be awarded second.

This is not the home plate umpires fault. Snickeris wasn't doing a straight steal he was in motion to prevent a double play. Snickeris should look in during his attempt to see if ball is hit. He overslid the bag also ( looked clear to me from 3rd base bleachers) which is his fault and not the umps. Watching the play live the 2nd base ump definitely only called him out after he came off the bag so regardless of a walk or not he made the right call. Don't slide past the bag and everything is good.

You know an umps typical ball four call? Nothing. The strike 3 call is emphatic the ball four call is passive. The ump did what every ump does. Nothing.

Except when someone's stealing. Then they emphatically call ball 4. In almost every case.

would the 2nd base umpire have called Snik OUT if the ball had beat him to the base? notice on the replay that the 3rd base umpire comes across and tells the 2nd base ump, "that was ball 4"; ss cannot bait the runner on an awarded base

Yes and had snickeris not come off bag he would have changed his call

Did he not? I don't know. It was a weird play all around but in the end called correctly. Unfortunately.

I could be wrong but I don't recall that he did. It seemed like everyone just froze at home, including the ump.

Not that I could see. I sat watching the TV in disbelief. I kept saying "well wasn't that a walk?"
Nobody knew.

How does an ump emphatically call ball 4?
Bottomline is baserunning is a weakness for LSU. I have never seen a team get thrown out on the bases so many times. This play just sums up how bad the baserunning is.

Like this:
Ball four!<---see that little thing at the end of my sentence? That's an exclamation point and it means you say things with heightened emotion.

The SS/2B wasn't baiting the runner. He was covering the bag and making a play, just like he would have done had it been called strike three. From the time the ball/strike call is made to the throw from the catcher reaching 2nd base, you're talking roughly 2 seconds ... to expect everyone to realize it's ball four and drop what they're doing is ridiculous. It's up to the runner to understand the situation and not overslide the bag, period, whether it would have been strike three or ball four.

It's unlucky if the team is known to be good at baserunning it's typical when they find countless ways to get thrown out on the base paths.

Gotcha. That would definitely have made a difference with 10,000 screaming fans.
