This whole coming off the bag thing is new to me. I mean, couldn't they just tag him between basepaths?
I'm completely ignorant here. WTF.
They are saying that once his hand hit the bag, then that was basically the end of the walk. Once he came off the bag, it was literally like stepping away from the bag and then he got tagged.
Not saying I agree with that. I'm saying that is how I think the Umps interpreted it.

Most baseball fans have never seen a play like that. Ball 4 usually kills ball. When he first slid in safe, dead ball was complete. Came off base (allegedly) and ball was live again. Legit call and bullshite at same time.

Prom Your last sentence is accurate. Two separate plays, awarded second, touched bag.next play ,came off bag tagged out.

Never before have I ever heard that a play goes from dead back to live after a walk. Never.

If he would have just stayed on the base, but since he came off after taking the base in a walk, he's a live base runner, Just because its a walk, he cant just come off the base without calling time

How is it dead?
I remember our little league coach making us run to first on a walk in case he catcher over threw the pitcher when throwing it back
Happened a lot in little league and got to second several times bc of it

It's never a "dead" ball. It's a free base. Once a player touches the next base, if they come off they are fair game.

Runner awarded second base on walk ,then came off bag and tagged out, good call IMO bad break for us but correct call.

It's not a dead ball. That's why you're supposed to hustle to first. No rule against advancing past a base on a walk

The ball is live. One scenario is when ball 4 gets by the catcher and the batter/runner goes to first and can advance to second at their own risk.

but once ball 4 is awarded, the play is dead. Nothing is live.
Unless time is called, the ball is always live.

a walk does not make the play dead ..
it is still a live play ....the runner on first advancing to second on the walk can continue to third if he wants...the play is not dead

The difficulty is that for people who watched it on tv, his foot was on the bag the entire time.

Him getting off the base was like taking a lead
A lead where his foot was on the bag the entire time.

I'll be honest, I like to consider myself pretty knowledgeable about rules, but once ball 4 is awarded, the play is dead. Nothing is live. This whole coming off the bag thing is new to me. I mean, couldn't they just tag him between basepaths? I'm completely ignorant here. WTF.
Yes, there is no play on a runner when he jogs to 2nd base. You can't tag someone out even for over-running the base on an awarded walk.

Yes, you can.

I thought it was as well, not to mention what has already been said - if the plate ump does his job and let's everyone know it's freaking ball four, it's a non issue.
a LOT went wrong for us on that play.

Snik is the worst and slowest baserunner on the team. It figures this would happen to him.
Posted on 6/9/12 at 2:32 pm to kanibal
He wasn't picked off.
The catcher tried to throw catch him out stealing.
Runner was safe.
Player tagged him claiming hand was off base, umpo didn't see his foot one was on and blew the call.
In no way was he "picked off"

So, you can throw players out during a walk?
