Like this:

Ball four!<---see that little thing at the end of my sentence? That's an exclamation point and it means you say things with heightened emotion.[/quote]

so it is on the ump to yell loud enough that a guy focused on stealing a base in a loud stadium can hear him? Catchers throw thru all the time and the ump is a foot away.

ETA: what if batter check swings on that play and an appeal is needed??

The fielder obstructed his path to the base, no matter how slight it was. Don't think any of this is against the rules. But feel free to submit it to rules committee.

If this is true then anytime there is a walk -- even to first, you should try to obstruct player to et him off of bag for pick off.

I always taught it is extremely stupid for catchers to throw when they know its ball 4 because you risk overthrowing the base and the runner gets an extra base, and there is no reward since the runner is awarded second anyway

even had our catcher in LL get chewed out one time for trying to throw a runner out stealing on a ball 4 call

what happened today is extremely freaking rare

Except when someone's stealing. Then they SHOULD emphatically call ball 4.

Had the home plate ump made an emphatic ball 4 call, the Stony Brook catcher would likely not have thrown down to second, not wanting to risk a bad throw.

Suppose it was ball four, and the ump didn't make a quick ball/strike call and the SB catcher threw it into CF and Snikeris advanced to third? I am sure Stony Brook would have complained too.

In order for a catcher to throw a runner out he can't really wait for ump to make the call. If pitch is borderline he is throwing

Gotcha. That would definitely have made a difference with 10,000 screaming fans.

Is it your assertion that talking on the baseball field is useless?

Yes. It is the umpire's responsibility to call the game so that the players know what is happening. Being all sneaky about balls and strikes doesn't help anybody out.

Then an appeal is called for, but that would be assuming that the home plate umpire CALLED A BALL. That's the only reason an appeal would be needed.

You do realize that I am saying that the ump should call ball four loudly for the benefit of the players on the field, not the batter.

It reduces the possibility of an injury on a play that would have never been made had we known it was ball four.

I get it. All of you guys are saying that it's not the responsibility of the umpire to inform the players of a call behind the plate...that would just be dumb, now wouldn't it?
