This is still the most intense battle reenactment I have ever seen. This is a great film, too!

Everytime I watch that scene, I thank God I didn't have to face that.

I was only in high school at the time, but I still can't believe that Shakespeare in Love beat out SPR for an Oscar. It almost seems criminal.

SPR did win the editing, sound and cinematography awards. But Shakespeare in Love was definitely not worthy of the big dawg.

Band of Brothers has some equally harrowing combat scenes as well, imo.

Agree. One of the most blatant Oscar travesties.

I agree. The Academy Awards should start issuing Best Picture 20 Years Later Awards. I can guarantee a lot of the films that won the original award would lose.

I've always thought they should have a category that does honor movies that weren't recognized the year they were released. It would reward movies that withstood the test of time and due to one reason or another, couldn't win the year it was released. They wouldn't have to do this every year either. I know this is sort of like awarding a Heisman to another player 20 years later, but it'd be cool nonetheless.

That seen where the guy is holding his guts still sticks with me.

Really makes you appreciate soldiers and vets...

Now You Know: Reactions After Seeing Saving Private Ryan

Great book with excerpts from DDay vets about the opening sequence of "SPR". You can get it from Amazon, I bought mine from the WW II museum in N.O.

And he was screaming for his mom. That part really got to me.

The opening scene was definitely awesome. And the acting was top rate.

I will say, though, that Band of Brothers kind of ruined Saving Private Ryan for me in some ways. BoB was so much better done from a narrative standpoint. In contrast, the main plot device in Saving Private Ryan was kind of clunky in retrospect (notwithstanding that it was based to some degree on an actual situation).

I will say that I still hate that reporter character after the German bastard that he made them let go ends up knifing the Jewish GI in such a horrible manner.

What about The Pacific? It had a few intense battle scenes also.

Without this movie, I don't think I would hold Giovanni Ribisi in such high regard as an actor.

I had a history teacher that started the war section of things with that landing. The teacher next to him was social studies and began every year with it. Asked the students what makes America so great. And then promoted them with why the need to keep it great and understand what it took to get here. Would make my class watch shite like that if I was an educator

Actually, the German guy they let do earlier IS the same guy who, at the end, shoots Tom Hanks, and is then shot by the Upham character you call the reporter. The German recognizes him.

The German who kills Mellish with the knife looks like the same one they let go, crewcut and all, but is not the same character.

I only know this because I thought the same as you and learned this sometime later--went back and looked at the DVD.

I will always think of him as Phoebe's little brother on Friends.
