I'm headed to Grand Isle in the morning to fish in the surf. Anyone know what they're biting: Plastics, live shrimp, or croakers?

Good time. I'm heavily considering making a trip Tuesday.
My brother did well free lining live croakers in the surf, but they were fishing from a boat in the surf

The next 2 days are going to be excellent. 5 mph in the morning. 1.5 foot tide movements and 5 star solar days. Me and my buddy went a couple weeks ago when the conditions were like this and caught 33 on carolina rigs with croakers in the surf.
Should be good the next couple of days if the waters clear.

They haven't been picky but the bite has been an early bite and has hinged on tide movement. So make sure you are in the water for sunrise. I would actually be out there just before sunrise. The bite has only been lasting till about 8:30-9:00 then it shuts down until later in the evening.
Suspending mirroulure crank baits are working well right now for the bigger fish as well as topwater(bone color). Throw double rigs for numbers. The water has been clear with sunny skies so throw stuff that is light in color.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like a glow in the dark DOA will do just the trick on a cork.
Thanks

That's always a popular choice but have some swim baits handy. Pay attention to the bait in the water. That's what they will want to eat.

Anxiously awaiting a report. I can't go, but have been dying to get back in the surf out there.

I was down this past weekend. East wind blowing real hard. Saturday, we got 32 trout along with a couple reds. Surf was a bit on the ruff side and the bite didn't last long.
Sunday, nothing in the surf. Water was very dirty. We headed to inside waters and fished a few islands and pick up a few trout, reds and flounders.
We fished plastics, croakers and live shrimp. Free lining shrimp was the ticket for the best trout using a very small hook. The shrimp were very small, about 60-80 count.
East winds were getting it thru out the weekend. The bay side had 1'- 1'.5" chop. Over all, it was my first trip down in almost two years. Food down there really sucked, bring your own and cook. We tryed a few places and ALL sucked.

Live shrimp did the best this weekend early, and once it slowed down we picked up a couple bruisers with plastics on spinner baits. Morning bite was awesome, evening bite sucked. Get out there early, we were closer to golden meadow but by all accounts you could have walked in between the boats off grand isle.

This is the pattern we have found over the past month or so. If you're not out there when the sun is coming up you've already missed the hot bite.
I fished the surf at Elmer's with live shrimp on Saturday and had a rough go at it. Couldn't get away from the spanish macks. Elmer's was packed...had boats passing 15 yards from me as I was standing in the surf.

I had assholes doing this when I was anchored and fishing. Some real screwed up people that should not be able to run a boat. Man, I wanted so bad to break out the 357.

For those of you that have been having good luck surf fishing, where have you been going. State park, jetties at camanada pass or Elmers

Fished Friday morning in the surf near Artie's.....17 trout on topwater (would have had more but massive bird's nest in my calcutta shut me down for about 15 mins) and 6 flounder jigging by the rocks. Topwater bite was done by 8am. Caught the the trout casting in the surf from ankle to knee deep water. Saw a few boats anchored on the gulf side of the rocks pitching live bait (croakers or minnows in not sure) on carolina rigs that were hooked up on nearly every cast. If you surf fish, watch out for sharks. Ive fished the surf on GI for decades and these were the first I've seen up close. Thankfully, the surf was full of bait and they weren't too interested in my leg.
